The Time Traveler's Quick Guide to Armageddon

Part Four

And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” (Re 19:11-16)

Our lesson on the battle of Armageddon, or Har Megiddo, will be deep this week, so deep that I cannot edit a simpler or quick version for the newsletter yet! Please join us on the livestream tomorrow so we can unpack this herd of white horses with their riders as well as their commander. Feel free to take screen shots of the quick-guide charts.

Samuel Ramsay's Insights on the

Arava Desert

Samuel Ramsay is an avid lover of Israel and the Arava, and he corresponds with several rabbis there. He lives in East Texas on a rural farm where he shepherds sheep, cleans up people’s yards, and birdwatches.

The Desert Hyacinth

The The Desert Hyacinth is one of the most fascinating plants found in Old World deserts. The Desert Hyacinth is a holoparasite, which means that it has no green pigment, no root, and no leaves.

This unique plant uses a drill-like structure that bores into the root of a neighboring plant, sucking all the nutrients out of the plant. Once the plant dies, the hyacinth also dies with it.

Its favorite plants to feed on are trees like Tamarisks / Salt Cedars, and Saltbushes. Although a sort of violent plant, it has beautiful yellow, cup-like flowers coming out of the main stem, with looks like a long spire. They can get up to a meter tall and look very similar to the Sea Squill.

The Desert Hyacinth spends almost all of its life underground, waiting for the right moment to pop up. Once it breaks the surface, it only takes 2-3 weeks to get to its full height.

Unlike normal hyacinths, the Desert Hyacinth produces a musky-smelling odor which attracts flies and beetles, so like a Jujube, it is pollinated by flies. It has a high saline tolerance, so it can grow in salt marshes and salty sand. They are commonly seen growing up from animal tracks because the disturbance of the soil allows moisture to sink in easier and softens the crusty and hard ground of the Aravah, allowing it to poke up.

What can we learn from this plant?

The Desert Hyacinth relies on other plants to survive, sucking all the nutrients out of them, and ultimately killing the plant and themselves. In relationships with people, how can we speak life to them and encourage them, building them up and strengthening the relationship?

When you speak death to people, you are tearing them down. Proverbs says that “kind words are like honey, sweetness to the soul and health to the body,” and James says that “the tongue is like a spark, which can set the world on fire.”

What we choose to do with our tongue is very important, and speaking evil does not just harm the person; it harms the one who spoke it. In the Parashah of Beha’alotecha, we see that Miriam is afflicted with leprosy. The rabbis say that the leprosy is a punishment of her speaking “lashon hara” or “evil tongue.” Because Merriam spoke badly about Moshe, she was afflicted with leprosy.

God takes our words seriously, and choosing life is crucial for not just building up other people, but also yourself (Philippians 4:8.) Tehillim (Psalm) 141:3:

“Set a guard, O Adonai, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.”

Orphanage News

Brother Ndungu conducted a successful negotiation for an available acre and a half of land near LaMalah Children's Home. We have paid most of the purchase price, the balance to be paid within 45 days, and acquired the deed. As funds are available, the property will be developed as a transition home and garden for the older children once they turn eighteen years old b'azrat Hashem.

We will also be sharing some information with you about Hadassah Orphanage in India soon.

From Brother Ndungu this week:

Shalom, my sister.

Some investors bought a land somewhere for subdivision. They removed all cedar fencing posts and replaced them with concrete ones. We are considering acquiring the cedar ones to fence the new property we are acquiring. As for now it's not fenced. We intend to have some barbed wire and hopefully plant a hedge later.

Joseph Njenga Mwika is now officially entering 2nd year at Dedan Kimathi University. In this college, they never have long breaks umlike other universities where they go for 2-4 months recess. Here, a course may take just 3 years. So, his fees are due by next week.

We are full throttle preparing for Sukkot which is coming late next month. Among our very first is looking for trees to buy and make fire so they will dry and be ready at the appointed time. Last but not least, one of the young men in the assembly (Deacon Kareithi Njenga) is studying at Jomo Kenyatta university of agriculture and technology (commonly referred to as "JKUAT "). He is taking a course in journalism. He secured an attachment (internship) at one of the big TV stations here and seeing him on the screen makes us happy. We give all honor, praises and esteem to our Heavenly Father.

Blessings

Peter
