By Kelly Desgrossellliers, Epiq Global

JULY 19 — TMA NOW, IWIRC, and the ACG Women’s Network hosted a joint networking event at Beatrix. Beverages and snacks were served. The turnout from all three groups was great, the event was sold out! Bringing the networks together allowed our members to broaden their contacts and introduce some new people to TMA.

Kat Parker, Chapter President

HYPERAMS, LLC

The year has flown by and with Q3 behind us, the planning for next year is already underway. The Sponsorship committee has already kicked off their campaign for 2024. It is because of our sponsors we are able to provide high quality programs throughout the year. I’d like to thank all of our sponsors for their support this year, especially our Platinum sponsors; Jenner & Block, Republic Business Credit, Harney Partners, Hilco Global & SAK Healthcare.

As we approach the final quarter, we finish off the year with some of the Chapter’s largest events. Continue...

Mastering the Mundane

Tina Hughes, CTP, Vice President, Communications

High Ridge Partners, LLC

I am sitting at my desk this afternoon, reviewing, and completing my timekeeping entries, lamenting a bit because it is a task that I don’t enjoy, but accept that it must be completed timely and professionally. My mind starts to wander to other work and tasks that I also need to tackle, and I realized that much of what we do each day is a bit repetitive in some ways. As a financial advisor, we sometimes schedule large sets of data points, read long technical documents such as loan agreements or other contracts, build financial trend cards, or perform research requiring detailed searches and review of information that may or may not ultimately be relevant to the analysis. I presume other turnaround professionals also have similar daunting tasks that must be accomplished to perform their work effectively.

Meanwhile, in the pursuit of success, the allure of the extraordinary often takes center stage. We're captivated by tales of grand achievements, groundbreaking innovations, and larger-than-life personalities. However, beneath the surface of every remarkable success story lies a foundation built upon mastering the mundane. Continue...

CHAPTER NEWS: TMA OUT N' ABOUT

June 13 and August 23: Cross-Chapter Power Hours Unite TMA Members Across the Country

By Tim Mulholland, TJM Limited

The TMA Chicago/Milwaukee chapter hosted two Virtual Network Power Hour (NPH) events this summer. On June 13, Northern and Southern California joined with 40 registrants, and on August 23, the Central Texas and the Dallas Fort Worth chapters joined with 26 registrants. Breakout room discussions centered on business activity that participants are seeing as well as a chance to network across different regions of the US. A special thanks to all who collaborated on these events. While the pandemic may have initiated these virtual events, they have continued to be extremely beneficial to TMA members.

June 20: Annual Lender Workout Panel a Sold Out Success

By Paul Musser, Akerman LLP

The TMA Chicago/Midwest Chapter presented its Annual Workout Lender’s Panel to a sold-out crowd. The event was hosted by Akerman LLP and included a reception after the panel. Moderator Paul Musser, Partner at Akerman LLP, led an informative discussion that addressed trends in the workout of distressed credits and the refinancing of distressed debt, the current state of the restructuring market and existing economic headwinds, the importance of lender and borrower/sponsor relationships in workouts and refinancing, and predictions for the remainder of 2023 and beyond. June 28: Summer Fun for NextGen in Chicago

By Alex Porter, Lathrop GPM LLP

NextGen members took some time to enjoy the Chicago summer and drinks on Joy District’s rooftop at the annual Summer Rooftop Event in June. The weather was great and the turnout was even better! The attendees had a great opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces while also meeting the many new faces in attendance.

July 18: Go NextGen, Go!

By Joe Ford, Wintrust

TMA NextGen Committee members Joe Ford, Alex Porter and Adam Zughayer put together a NextGen Networking event at the Cubs v. Washington Nationals game in July. The night was full of cold beer, tasty food and lively conversation. Several new faces were among the sold-out crowd of 30, which is always the goal of NextGen events — to build on the already growing population of TMA NextGen members. This was the first year the NextGen members took in a Cubs game from a rooftop (formerly the bleachers); and it figures to start a great summer tradition for years to come!

July 25: Breakfast on the River

By Jack O'Connor, Levenfeld Pearlstein

TMA jointly co-hosted the annual cross-organizational networking event at Rivers in the Loop with members of the Secured Finance Network (SFNet) Midwest, the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) Chicago, and the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) Chicago — a new addition for 2023!

On a beautiful summer morning along the Chicago River, more than 130 professionals were in attendance. Attendees were treated to a great morning of networking, food and drink, and strengthening bonds between our professional companion organizations. Now in its eight year, the event continues to provide our members with an opportunity to celebrate summer and make new connections in the process.

July 27: NGLC Takes on Chicago

By Alex Porter, Lathrop GPM LLP

Chicago proudly hosted this year’s TMA NextGen Leadership Conference (“NGLC”). It turned out to be an amazing event with tremendous turnout from young professionals across the country. The Chicago NextGen community also had a strong presence of local members in attendance, which demonstrated the growing and active NextGen community in Chicago. In partnership with Levenfeld Pearlstein, the Chicago NextGen Committee also co-hosted an “Opening Reception” the night of July 26, 2023, to welcome all attendees of the conference. Like prior years, the NGLC was a great opportunity for the NextGen community to get together, build strong relationships with peers, and continue to progress as leaders in the turnaround industry.
