CAPE COD TECH'S FFA
STATE CONVENTION WINNERS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

On April 12 at the Arbor Skills Career Development Event the team of Bo Lynch, Samantha Virgin, Cassandra Madru and Jesse Ventresca took third place in the state. Bo Lynch took home a silver medal. There are several practicums in this competition. Each team member had to complete a working climb, speed climb, tree identification, knot tying, throw line placement, general knowledge test and tool identification. These amazing kids were the only vocational school in the top three. The other schools are Agricultural schools whose students major in arboriculture.

We also had Brie Talamantez, Adam Dewitt and Nate Christensen compete on our B team. They did great and got some tremendous experience that they can build upon for next year.

Thursday April 25th 10 Horticulture students competed in the MA State FFA Hardscape Career Development Event at Upper Cape Tech in Bourne, MA.  The A team of Kali Pate, Samantha Virgin, Cassandra Madru and Lucas Rebello took home another gold medal!  Kali took first overall individual and Samantha took second. Both Cassie and Lucas took Silver individual awards. This is the second year in a row that we have won this CDE and this is the second CDE we have won this year.

The Hardscape competition consists of a working hardscape building project of an inside corner segmented block wall and a brick paver patio. There is also a general knowledge test and a tool identification practicum.

The B team of Charlie Rolfe, Kyle O'Connell, Sierra Leighton, Dean Bailey, Ava Matheson and Sarah Franey completed an excellent build and gained some valuable experience so that they one day can continue to carry the torch as we already look ahead to competing in this event next year and becoming 3 time state champs!

Parents, there are a lot of changes ahead as Cape Tech prepares for construction of our new building. The Main Entrance is still located in the same location. For parents who need to access the building please enter in this doorway. However, parents will need to park in the available parking areas and walk up to the Main Entrance for the Public.

Attendance Matters

94.29%!!!! (We are in the red in attendance!)
That was our 2nd Trimester attendance rate! That is below our expectations. We need to get this number up. Currently our year to date attendance rate is 95.17% This has dropped .07% from last month! Parents and students we need to expect more from ourselves. Attendance matters.

The state expects a 95% rate for student attendance. We want to achieve a 95.9% rate for the year. We can do this, but students need to come to school everyday. No excuses. Remember, your boss will expect you at work everyday, and so will your co-workers. Build healthy habits now. Come to school because we want you here!
Tech Talk

Congratulations to the staff of Tech Talk, who recently learned that they have received three prestigious awards from the American Scholastic Press Association.

First, Senior Molly Byrne received an award for O utstanding Sports Coverage for her October 2018 story, "Football Charges Into November."

In addition, Tech Talk was one of four papers for schools with populations between 500 and 1,000 to receive a First Place with Special Merit recognition , scoring more than 950 out of a possible 1,000 points.

Finally, Tech Talk was recognized in the Special Awards category and was one of only eight papers in the country to receive the designation of Most Outstanding High School Newspaper.

The ASPA reviews hundreds of high school and college newspapers from across the country, judging entries on writing, photography, and editing.

This year's Tech Talk staff includes:

Adam Beal
Molly Byrne
Hannah Capra
Harley Christensen
Matthew Cortes
Samantha Hennessy
Jennifer Hollis
Erin Lloyd
Cristian Marsh
Adriana Santiago
Harry Vuong

Further congratulations to Tech Talk staff members, who earned awards in three of the four writing categories as part of a competition sponsored by the Cape Cod Times.

DVC junior Phoenix Stroh won second place in the News/Feature category for his profile on a local Mashpee man who portrayed Santa Claus for many years. Electrical senior Adam Beal earned a second place in Sports writing for his piece on Cape Tech's new eSports team, and Health Tech senior Matthew Cortes took a third place award for his review of the video game Black Ops III.

One of the judges of the competition said he was particularly impressed with the submissions he reviewed from Cape Tech students. Copies of The annual Classroom Times competition were included in The Cape Cod Times in April. The competition attracted entries from more than two dozen schools across Cape Cod and the Islands, including all of the region's public and private high schools.

Food Services Information

Dear Parents and Guardians:

The new school year is upon us, and we want to extend a warm welcome and let you know that Cape Cod Tech's School Food & Nutrition Services has some exciting plans in place for serving your child nutritious and delicious meals at school.  Our mission is to ensure that we not only serve healthy and well-balanced meals, but foods your children will want to eat.
The District utilizes a Point of Sales (POS) system called Meals Plus to increase the level of service to families and to provide more accurate school meal accounting. One of the biggest advantages to Meals Plus is the ability to allow parents to prepay for meals. Every student will be assigned a four digit PIN # which they will use each day to pay for their lunch and/or breakfast. When they type their PIN into the number pad, their picture will appear on the cashier's screen along with their name, grade, and account balance. Any money that the student gives the cashier will be deposited into their account.

If you have any questions please contact me in the food service office at 508-255-8800 ext. 120 or email  smurray@capetech.us
I look forward to serving your children delicious and nutritious meals!

Thank you,

Susan Murray, SNS
Director of Food & Nutrition Services
