November 2025 | Newsletter

Dear Reader,

November 4th is Election Day, when we will head out to the polls to participate in one part of the democratic process. Civic engagement, voter education, and ballot-box funding measures are some of the things that connect local libraries with local elections. Libraries are critical institutions offering public spaces for community members to access trusted information and engage in discourse that may bridge political divides. As such, libraries promote knowledge, learning, and community.

Our Library has been a hub for voter engagement, serving as a nonpartisan civic center supporting voter registration and access to reliable information about elections and ballot initiatives. As you have seen in recent Friends’ newsletters, our library has hosted candidate forums, debates, and informational sessions, promoting informed participation over the past two months.

The representatives you vote for have a direct effect on the library itself. In some communities, elected officials have overwhelmingly approved increased funding for their libraries; others have rejected it, leading to staffing and service cuts—one more reason to be an informed and active voter.

Our library is one of the centers of democracy in the city, strengthening civic literacy by promoting critical thinking, dialogue, and democratic participation across generations. It offers youth initiatives and partnerships—such as school or community organization voter-education projects—nurturing lifelong civic habits. Because our librarians are trusted, accessible, and politically neutral, they create safe spaces for individuals to engage in political learning without partisanship.

The initiation into the joy of learning, love of reading, and critical thinking begins at the youngest ages. Therefore, we are so excited to announce the (RE)LAUNCH PARTY for the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program on Saturday, November 15th. If you are a parent, guardian, family member, or loving neighbor, this is the day to come with your infant or toddler (ages 0 - 5) for a FREE fun-filled time for littles. See the poster below for details about joining this initiative providing reading incentives, a free book bag, and a book.

As always, we appreciate your engagement. On that note, many thanks to the astute reader who pointed out that we mis-gendered Lady Luck in French, rendering her bon chance rather than the correct bonne chance. We appreciate the correction!

Your Friends,

- Paul & Celine
