Celebrate Small Business
May 2-8 is National Small Business Week. Here at Patten Free Library, we are so grateful to the local small business community for supporting our programs with generous Business Partner sponsorships. We show our appreciation with public thanks on our book return boxes, Grab n Go crafts, Cloud Library shelves, via social media tags, in our eNews and programming promotion, by offering display space for brochures and wares, with branded periodical sponsorships, and more. Next time you're in the library, check out our Businss Supporter wall or click here for a list of our partners. When you shop local with these businesses, be sure to thank them for supporting the library! You can also learn more about our Business Partners program on our website.

The Movie Discussion Group decided to take a brief hiatus in May, but we're already working on themes for the next series. A leading contender is the lesser-known films of Alfred Hitchcock. Would you like to join the group when we resume meeting? Add your name to our e-mail list by clicking here.
Movie buff Al Fick is our fearless discussion leader. We're so grateful to him for sharing his time, knowledge, and enthusiasm.

367 Years Ago at Merry Meeting
What is the oath of fidelity? Charles Evans made a study of the various "Oaths of Allegiance in Colonial New England," published in the October 1921 issue of the Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society. He examined several examples of such oaths.
In brief, the oath relates to the formation of a government, which Baker considered—after the Popham Colony and the emergence of trade on the Kennebec—the start of a third act in our region's colonial history.

Celebrate National Poetry Month with a Picture and a Poem
|
|
This is our last National Poetry Month entry from Shannon (who is also our book reviewer this week!). This week's selection is from Ada Limon's poem "Instructions on Not Giving Up." Thanks to Shannon for sharing some of her favorite poems and pictures this month.
...Patient, plodding, a green skin
growing over whatever winter did to us, a return
to the strange idea of continuous living despite
the mess of us, the hurt, the empty. Fine then,
I’ll take it, the tree seems to say, a new slick leaf
unfurling like a fist to an open palm, I’ll take it all.

What We're Reading (and Watching)
|
|
This week's book review is by Shannon Bowring, our Tech Services Coordinator. She gives the thumbs up to Mill Town, a new and well-researched book about Mexico, Maine (where the author grew up), and the environmental and health impacts of the paper industry on its residents. Read Shannon's full review here.
