Our Mission: To proclaim Christ through faith, hope and love.

Note From Neil

Friends,

On this All-Saints Sunday, we pause to remember. We remember those whose lives have touched ours, whose love has sustained us, whose courage has inspired us, and whose faith has helped shape the people we are becoming.

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that a great cloud of witnesses surrounds us. What a beautiful image! We do not travel this journey of faith alone.

I often think back to my early years in ministry at Metropolitan Community Church in Bournemouth, England. It was there that I began to understand what it truly meant to be church for people whom the world, and often organized religion, had rejected. During the HIV/AIDS crisis, I witnessed extraordinary acts of courage, compassion, and love. Through pastoral ministry and hospice chaplaincy, I encountered people who became living examples of God's grace. People who held the hands of the dying, created families where biological families had disappeared, and insisted that every human being deserved dignity, belonging, and love.

Some of those saints are no longer with us, but their witness has never left me. And here is what I find so extraordinary: the journey from Bournemouth to Los Angeles and to Cathedral of Hope in Dallas is more than a personal journey across an ocean. It is a continuation of the same sacred story.

The saints who built MCC Bournemouth, Founders MCC in Los Angeles, and those who founded Cathedral of Hope shared a radical conviction: that God's love belongs to everyone. They dared to create sacred spaces where LGBTQ+ people could discover not merely acceptance, but affirmation; not simply survival, but the possibility of flourishing and thriving.

The geography changed, the congregations grew, and the years passed, but the Gospel remained the same. I sometimes look across our congregation on a Sunday morning and realize that I am witnessing the legacy of those early saints. Every person who walks through our doors seeking belonging, every meal served, every injustice challenged, every life transformed is part of a story that began long before many of us arrived.

We are standing on holy ground made possible by the faithfulness of others.

That is why gratitude is so much more than appreciation for what we possess. It is the recognition that life itself is an extraordinary gift, and that none of us became who we are entirely on our own.

All Saints Sunday is not simply about remembering the past. It is about accepting responsibility for the future. Those saints did not finish the work of love, justice, compassion, and liberation. They entrusted it to us. The question is whether future generations will look back upon our witness with the same gratitude with which we remember those who came before us.

Friends, from Bournemouth to Dallas, the race continues. The cloud of witnesses surrounds us, and Jesus calls us forward. May our gratitude become action, our remembering become renewed commitment, and our lives proclaim Christ through faith, hope, and love.

For the saints who have gone before us, thanks be to God. For the saints among us, thanks be to God. And for the saints we are still becoming, may God grant us courage.

With faith, hope, and love,

Rev. Dr. Neil G. Thomas

Senior Pastor

The Shapes of Gratitude

New Sermon Series

November 1, 2026 - November 22, 2026

Gratitude is often associated with noticing the good things in our lives and giving thanks for them. But Christian gratitude asks something more of us. It begins with recognizing that much of what has shaped our lives came to us as a gift. We have received faith, wisdom, courage, love, community, and grace from God and from people who have walked beside us and before us. Gratitude invites us to remember those gifts, to honor those who have given of themselves, and to recognize the sacred worth of lives that might otherwise be forgotten. It does not ask us to ignore grief, suffering, or injustice. Instead, gratitude helps us recognize what is precious and calls us to respond faithfully.

Throughout November, The Shapes of Gratitude considers what happens when gratitude becomes more than something we feel and becomes a way of living. On All Saints’ Day, we remember those whose lives and faith have shaped our own. As Veterans Day approaches, we honor service and sacrifice while holding fast to Christ’s call to peace. On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we bear witness to lives lost to violence and affirm the sacred worth of those who continue to seek safety, dignity, and belonging. Finally, as we approach Thanksgiving, gratitude moves us toward generosity as our community gathers food for hundreds of families. Across these four Sundays, gratitude takes us on a journey: we remember, we honor, we bear witness, and we give. Grace received becomes grace shared.

All Saint's Sunday

Sunday November 1, 2026

All Services

Join us at Cathedral of Hope for All Saints Sunday, a sacred time to remember, honor, and celebrate the lives of those we have loved and lost. In this special service, we will gather as a community to honor the saints who have gone before us, finding comfort in shared remembrance, strength in one another, and hope in the enduring promise of love. Whether you come to remember a beloved family member, a dear friend, or someone whose life left a lasting impact on yours, you are welcome here.

Come as you are, bring the memories you cherish, and join us as we hold space for grief, celebrate love, and give thanks for the lives that continue to shape who we are. We look forward to gathering with you in remembrance, gratitude, and hope.

Discover the Labyrinth: An Ancient Pathway of Prayer

November 1, 2026

8:30am – 3pm

Interfaith Peace Chapel

Are you looking for new ways to deepen your spiritual practice? The labyrinth is one of the oldest contemplative tools in the Christian tradition and beyond. Unlike a maze, it is not meant to trick or frustrate you. With one way in and one way out, the labyrinth invites you to release distractions about “where to go next” and instead focus on being present with God.

Walking the labyrinth is a moving meditation. It can be walked alone or with others, at a pace that suits you. Most people complete the journey in twenty minutes to an hour. Each step can become a prayer, opening space for reflection, healing, and awareness of God’s presence.

Benefits of walking the labyrinth include:

  • Quieting the mind
  • Opening the heart
  • Integrating body, mind, and spirit
  • Awakening creativity
  • Cultivating self-awareness
  • Nurturing spiritual growth

Come and experience this sacred pathway. As you walk, you may find yourself drawn closer to God and to the mystery of the Spirit moving within and around you

7pm-10pm

Our Lady of Guadalupe: A Celebration of Faith, Tradition & Belonging

There are some traditions that feel like coming home. The familiar songs, voices gathered in prayer, cherished memories, and the traditions passed down from one generation to the next.

This December, we invite you to come home to Cathedral of Hope for our annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. On Friday, December 11, we’ll gather to celebrate the faith and traditions of our Hispanic community through prayer, music, fellowship, and hospitality.

Whether this celebration has been part of your life for generations, brings back memories of home, or is something you’re experiencing for the first time, there is a place for you here.

Come share in the music, the memories, the joy, and the community, and help us create new memories together.

Come as you are. Come as family. Come celebrate with us.

Holiday Volunteers Needed!

The holiday season is coming up, and we could use some extra hands in our Children & Youth Ministry! You do not need teaching experience or any special skills. If you enjoy being around kids and youth and want to help create a welcoming, fun, and supportive space for them, we would love to have you.

Whether you can help for one Sunday, a few Sundays, or throughout the holiday season, every extra set of hands makes a difference! Interested in helping out? Talk to Amani or reach out to amurphy@cathedralofhope.com to learn more.

Your Voice

Belongs in Worship

We are especially inviting women and nonbinary people at Cathedral of Hope to consider serving as Lay Readers. During our 8:30am and 10:00am services, Lay Readers read scripture, lead the congregation in gratitude through the call to the offering, and help preside over Communion. This is a meaningful opportunity to help shape our shared worship.

No experience is necessary. Comfort with public speaking and reading aloud is helpful, and your willingness to serve is a wonderful place to begin. Readings are provided in advance, and you can arrange a time to practice in the sanctuary if that would help you feel more comfortable.
