"FOOD TASTES BETTER AT SEA: DINING ABOARD

THE SS UNITED STATES"

Launching next week on Thursday, May 29

Our newest digital exhibit, “Food Tastes Better at Sea: Dining Aboard the SS United States” launches on the Conservancy’s website next week on Thursday, May 29.

Presented by our Curatorial Associate J. van Kuilenburg, this exhibit showcases the exceptional care that was put into all aspects of food and dining aboard the SS United States.

Dining was a key part of the travel experience on the world’s fastest and most powerful ocean liner. Many former passengers vividly recall the restaurants, the food, and the dining service during their transatlantic journeys. This rich history has been preserved with family photos, oral histories, and original ship menus which will be featured in the exhibit.

The Conservancy is proud to have the world's largest collection of SS United States artifacts, art, and archival documentation, much of it donated to us from former passengers and crewmembers.

In the photo above, a party of eight passengers dressed in black tie attire enjoy dinner at a gala aboard the Big U. Gala dinners offered a multi-course meal, with appetizer options ranging from "Beluga Malossol Caviar with Toast" to "Iced Table Celery," followed by a soup course with a choice of "Clear Green Turtle" to "Consommé, Royale." Familiar and far-flung meat dishes, from steak, to duck, to kangaroo impressed and intimidated passengers. Extensive offerings were not exclusive to galas, but were a hallmark of the dining experience from breakfast to room service on the SS United States.

These memories, artifacts, and more, will be available to explore next week. Stay tuned for future member programs exploring the exhibit's themes, special recipes from the Big U you can try at home, and more updates on the exhibition and the Conservancy's museum plans!

SS UNITED STATES, 1958

Conservancy supporter Francisco O Rios recently shared this beautiful photo of the SS United States. While stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany, with the US Air Force from 1956 to 1959, he captured this stunning image of the ocean liner docking in 1958. We are so grateful to Francisco for donating this photo to the Conservancy future museum.
