FTA Announcements:
FTA Announces $20 Million in Grants to Help Communities Prosper with Improved Access to Transit
FTA today announced that it will award $20 million to 47 communities to help improve public transportation options in areas experiencing long-term economic distress, one of the many ways the Biden-Harris Administration is investing in America by creating jobs and opportunity through infrastructure investment. FTA’s Areas of Persistent Poverty (AoPP) program provides support to state and local governments, transit agencies, and nonprofit organizations to create better transit for residents with limited or no transportation options.
Congratulations to the City of Cincinnati!
FTA Seeks Public Comment on Proposed New Consolidated Urban Grant Programs Circular
FTA is seeking public input on a new draft guidance document, Grant Programs for Urbanized Areas: Program Guidance and Application Instructions. The circular will combine and update information from three existing grant program guidance documents:
The new circular will update information published between 2014 and 2015 in the three existing circulars and streamline programmatic information. It will also incorporate regulations and provisions from the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act; Pub. L. 114-94 (2015)), the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA; Pub. L. 117-58 (2021)), the Uniform Administrative Requirements for Federal awards to non-Federal entities, and current FTA policies and procedures.
The proposed new structure will move some content from the three existing program circulars to FTA’s Award Management Requirements Circular C 5010.1, which will also be updated.
FTA has published a notice summarizing the proposed new consolidated circular in the Federal Register. FTA encourages stakeholders to review the notice and provide comments through September 11, 2023
REMINDER: FTA Seeks Public Comment on Updates to the National Public Transportation Safety Plan
As part of continuing efforts to enhance transit safety for transit workers and riders across the county, FTA published proposed updates to the National Public Transportation Safety Plan in the Federal Register on May 31, 2023. This serves as a reminder to submit your comments on the proposed changes by July 31, 2023.
The National Public Transportation Safety Plan is FTA’s primary guidance document to improve transit safety performance on all federally supported public transportation systems and includes best practices, tools, technical assistance, voluntary standards and other resources. FTA’s proposed updates align with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s goal to make our transportation systems safer for all. The proposed updates would replace the original plan published in January 2017 and incorporate Bipartisan Infrastructure Law requirements.
While the National Public Transportation Safety Plan is not a regulation and does not impose mandatory requirements, it creates a blueprint for transit agencies to adopt stronger safety measures. FTA updated the plan to include voluntary minimum safety standards and recommended practices for improving public transportation safety.
