Practice Gratitude

What are you thankful for? That’s the question we’re going to be asking this month.

Now, if you’re reading this on November 1st, your gut reaction might be, “not much.” Prices are high, trust is low, and if we never see another political attack ad it will be too soon. We’re already beginning to dread the “Holidays,” a season that used to be about peace and joy, but is now about seeking to simultaneously meet thousands of competing demands on our time and attention.

So, what’s to be thankful for?

Well, a lot actually. For one thing, God exists. There is an all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-loving entity who created the heavens, and the earth, and you.

And that’s another thing to be thankful for. You exist. You are here. You woke up this morning with the atmosphere that God created filling your lungs.

And there’s more. The God who created you loves you. As my grandaddy used to say, He loves you “more than thunder can bump a stump.” In fact, He loves you so much He sent His Son so you could enjoy an eternal life lived in the presence of His love. You can rest entirely secure in the knowledge that in Him, you are everywhere and always perfectly safe; nothing eternally bad can ever happen to you. If that isn’t a good reason to be thankful, I don’t know what is.

When you take a minute to think about it—and detach yourself from all the “stuff” the world is throwing at you—the reasons and opportunities to practice gratitude are infinite. They extend from this moment, through the rest of our physical lives, and into eternity. As the song says, “When we’ve been there 10,000 years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we'd first begun.”

Gratitude. It’s important. It’s powerful. It brings us closer to God and the kind of people we were created to be. And it’s what we’re going to be talking about in our Sunday worship this month. So, I invite you to set aside some time for intentional gratitude this day, this week, this month, and beyond.
