Greetings from Sustainable Cambodia!
|
|
We hope you enjoy these stories from our schools and the villages in which we work…
Sustainable Cambodia recently hosted six groups of high school students from World Challenge, UK. World Challenge organizes leadership & learning service expeditions for school groups of 15-18 year-olds. Their expeditions focus on personal development, cultural immersion, and service learning. Their goal is to inspire students to become responsible global citizens.
And the inspiration is mutual. The World Challenge students came from the Highcliffe School, Ripon Grammar School, two Chancellor State Colleges, Parade College, and Southend High School for Girls. And their work and enthusiasm was inspiring for everyone they met, and especially so for the SC students they worked with.

During their time in Cambodia, the World Challenge team:
- Built a new playground for the children.
- Painted murals on the walls of the school, showing scenes from Cambodian culture.
- Played skill games with the children
- Helped the SC students to improve speaking and presentation skills.
- Spent time getting to know the local community and learning about Cambodian culture by visiting the monument to a legendary ancient Cambodian hero and the Pagoda.

Together, we are making the world a better place for children to live, grow and learn. Although the group was only onsite for a relatively short time, the goodwill and open hearts the trip created will last for many years, and the connections with the local families will be lasting as well.

Consider a Rotarian-led Trip to Cambodia!
|
Sign up to receive information about Nov 2024 and Jan 2025 trips
Participate from only USD $995/pp
Those who read our last few newsletters know the miracles that happen on these volunteer Rotarian-led trips. We go far off the "tourist routes", back into the rural villages in the center of the country where we work with the families. You will meet those families, be surrounded by the children, and be immersed in the love and good works that come when Rotarians follow their Service Above Self motto.
These are open for anyone to come. Rotarians and non (maybe future) Rotarians, from children traveling with their parents or grandparents, to "youngsters" in their 80's, and everyone in between. It's the adventure of a lifetime.
Reserve your place today, or sign up for information on future trips.
Don't miss out on this wonderful experience!

Our Story Highlights
Interesting message from our scholar Meyneang
|
|
 |
Greetings! My name is Meyneang. I am a university student in Phnom Penh. Without the support of Sustainable Cambodia and my dear sponsors, I would not be where and who I am today. I was just a young girl, living with my family, who could only dream that maybe someday I could pursue higher education. And then we learned about Sustainable Cambodia.
My parents had no education. They worked in the rice fields and farm to raise five siblings and me. Only my first older brother and I have higher education. And that's because my brother is also studying in Sustainable Cambodia.
I never imagined a place like SC where I could study English and computer skills. I feel so grateful for everything. Thank you so much for supporting me and other students in having a good education and better lives.
Thanks to my dear sponsors, Erika and John, for your love and support. I love you.

Sponsorship Makes a Lifelong Difference!
Sponsoring a student changes their life forever. Whole vistas of opportunity open for them, and for their families.
And sponsorship continues, even if your circumstances as a sponsor means you must let the sponsorship go at some point. SC's commitment is that no child will ever be turned away from Sustainable Cambodia for lack of a sponsor after the child has entered the program. We will continue to support the child in the program.
So please consider helping out while you can!

Thanks to Michael Long’s Family Support
|
|
Michael Long chose to provide cows to two families in the village of Domrey Sor. The families happily agreed to be part of the animal pass-on program, though which other families will also benefit as calves are born. Along with the initial gift of the cows, the SC agriculture team taught the families technical skills, including animal husbandry, cow raising, keeping the environment safe and clean around the animal house, and encouraging them to give vaccinations every year. Through the provision of animals and training, the beneficiaries will be able to raise their animals successfully and pass on the first calves that are born to the next waiting beneficiary families.
The first family received one female cow from the animal pass-on program funded by Michael Long. When the cows have offspring over the next two years, they will pass on the female calves to the next waiting family. Through this wonderful cycle of passing on, the community will be able to have a constant supply of animals.

Village Gift of Improving Family’s Income
|
|
Forming Self Help Groups (SHG): To have sustained group members, the SC project team collaborated with the village chief to organize a meeting with 20 families from Domrey Sor village. The main objective of the meeting was to provide information on the procedures, criteria, and responsibilities involved in becoming an SHG member. Following the meeting, 15 families expressed their interest and satisfaction with the project and signed the contract to become SHG members. In the group member, we selected a group leader responsible for inviting members to the monthly meeting, listing gardening materials that are needed in the group, monthly follow up to each onsite member's gardens to make ensure that they grow vegetables regularly, and following with the guidelines, and sharing trainings with other members.
Home Garden Training: we invited 15 SHG members, one person from each family to attend the home vegetable garden training. The training topics were to train members to understand the benefit of making their home garden a source of income and also providing nutrition food to family to eat daily, how to maintain vegetables from the germination stage to the harvest stage, soil preparation when using natural fertilizer, and creative growing style by using such as foam buckets, hanging bottle, cement bags.
