August 2025 | Newsletter

Dear Reader,

Summertime can be a time of magic for children – typified by splashing, hiking, and biking; foundational camp experiences; fireworks and festivals; family travel adventures to parts both known and unknown. But it can also bring the challenges of open hours for weeks on end, hours during which parents and guardians still need to be working; food insecurity when school breakfast and lunch are no longer at hand; hot days, heat warnings, and no air conditioning in homes; and anxious thoughts as the new school year approaches. To borrow a phrase from a popular parenting podcast, June through August can be “the longest shortest time.” How does the library serve as a resource for children and families in these months that so markedly bring both promise and vulnerability to our community?

Every Tuesday, all summer long, just in front of the library, families have been invited to the free Summer Eats Program, a Greenfield Public Schools program open to all area youth. Sporting the tag line REAL FOOD on the MOVE!, the Green Wave Food Truck has been serving grab & go breakfast, lunch, & supper across the city all summer long. The library is proud to be one of five lunch sites and four supper sites across the city. (At each site, breakfast is also available for the next morning.) Youth and families sometimes pair dinner pickup from the food truck with the Tuesday family movie offered at the library at 5:30pm. Where else can kids get dinner and a movie out, free of charge?!?

We know that, for all children, continuing to practice literacy skills during the summer months can help prevent “summer slide” (loss of reading and other academic skills during the break from school), while enhancing cognitive development, fostering a love of reading, and supporting social-emotional development, increased self-esteem, and healthy relaxation habits. For older kids, just 15 minutes of leisure reading a day can increase SAT scores and lower stress levels by 70%. The library’s youth summer reading programs – complete with kick-off parties and ice cream prizes – support area kids in all of these important ways.

More generally, our AC-cooled library has hosted a bevy of activities and resources over the summer: young people had the chance to speak directly with a MassHire Youth Specialist about jobs, get support crafting resumes, access the items in the teen room’s care cabinet, share views and reflections by recording for the Community Conversations Teen Hotline, and participate in a whole spate of activities including painting fairy houses, making bracelets for Pride, open lego-playtime, a DinoFest theater performance by the Piti Theater, storytimes for babies and toddlers, and the opportunity to meet with a therapy dog.

August brings more such opportunities to our community, as you will see in the listings below. Take note of the Back to School Fair on Tuesday, August 19th, 4-6pm, open to all youth entering 7th grade through college. The fair will feature a backpack clean-out, free school supplies, and skillbuilding opportunities with local experts. Refreshments will be served, door prizes awarded, and participants will start the school year more calm, confident, and prepared!

As always, we appreciate your engagement.

Your Friends,

- Celine & Paul

Greenfield's Amazing Hidden Deep History

Richard Little

Wednesiday, August 6

6:30 pm

Community Meeting Room

Richard Little will explain the "hidden" stories that are under our feet and in our view and how you can discover them. And he will bring rare Jurassic Armored Mud Balls to show and touch! You can find them in Greenfield, too. What a place!

The geological history of Greenfield and vicinity explains many strange things about our commonly seen landscape. The Connecticut River used to flow across the Meadows and old meander channels can still be seen. The Poet's Seat is on Jurassic lava. Did it flow into a lake or on land? The answer is "both."

Richard Little is Prof. Emeritus, Greenfield Community College. He came to Greenfield from California in 1969 and rapidly discovered that this is the best place in the world to study geology.

Little has written two books about our local and regional geology plus is the discoverer of the rare Jurassic Armored Mud Balls, now being considered in the Legislature to be the official "State Sedimentary Structure".

Please visit: https://ArmoredMudBalls.rocks to learn more and come to the talk to discover the hidden history in your view and under your feet. Prof. Little will bring Jurassic armored mud ball specimens to touch plus books for sale.

Collected works 2020 - 2025”: mixed media by Jeremy Ferris

Wooly bear flags hang above lichen encrusted paths crisscrossing the overgrown and abandoned farmlands of the Northeastern United States.

The occasional wooden relic points the way once mapped by largely illegible schematic diagrams. Unorthodox explorations of folk and fantasy art join together photo collage, sumi ink, graphite, and house paint.

Jeremy Ferris was born in Washington County, New York in 1989. They went to school to learn about art, cognitive science, and archives and have worked as a farm hand, digital archivist, cheesemonger, printmaking instructor, and now a teen librarian. Jeremy and their cat Nico live in Providence, RI. They are currently plotting and building a witch fence with their sweetheart. Jeremy also makes music and audio recordings under the name Cla-ras.
