President's Message

ABPM is proud to be living up to its motto. We are “Certifying Today’s Podiatrist”. Not only is ABPM certifying more podiatrists annually than any other board, we are advocating for you and all of podiatry. In our Podiatry Forward campaign, we’re focused on clarity, fairness, and unity.

You’ll hear more from our Podiatry Forward campaign in 2023 and there will be continued decisive action from this Board of Directors on clarity, fairness, and unity in the profession.

We believe in clarifying the board certification experience in podiatry. The profession has evolved, and so must board certification. Boards that don’t evolve will find themselves experiencing a version of professional natural selection. Since 2011, there is now a single, CPME-standardized residency training model. Not having a single primary board certification at the end of that residency program does not serve the public or the profession. And if a podiatrist decides to voluntarily seek additional recognitions beyond board certification, those should be offered. ABPM’s Board Certification and Certificates of Added Qualification (CAQ) live up to this goal.

We’re out there taking meaningful and specific actions supporting podiatrists across the US. In the State of Oregon, they’ve limited a podiatrist’s access to the full scope of practice to those who are board certified in RRA by a single board. That is an additional step that is not required for any MD or DO in the state. ABPM has been a forceful advocate to ensure that podiatrists are treated the same as other physicians in their licensing process. ABPM provided written comments and I testified at a state hearing explaining that board certification is separate from state licensure.

In New York State, there are over 2,200 licensed in-state podiatrists and roughly 34 of them have the Advanced Ankle Permit. Again, the permit is only available to those who have a particular RRA certification. Many of the “have not” podiatrists in the state have excellent surgical training. In fact, much of that comprehensive training is coming from inside the state. Patients and podiatrists in New York deserve better. Patients in the state need access to competent podiatrists for their foot and ankle care. They shouldn’t have to drive across a state line to receive this care. ABPM will not stand idly by in the face of discrimination of competent, board-certified podiatrists.

The student recruitment crisis is having immediate, but also looming lasting effects. Without unity in our profession, promoting the positives and fixing the negatives, we will enter a period of professional decline. Dr. Jason Lee, the founding Dean of the new LECOM School of Podiatric Medicine, told me something I thought to be profound; “You can’t shrink the profession into prosperity.” This crisis will require immediate and decisive action from all the stakeholders in the profession. I ask that you communicate with your leaders and insist upon it. And if they refuse to act, take the leadership role on yourself.

ABPM has become the new US national representative to the International Federation of Podiatrists (FIP). Now we represent American podiatrists on the international stage where we will work to achieve our goals of improving podiatric education and care worldwide. ABPM is filling its ranks with proven leaders in podiatry. You may have seen that we welcomed former APMA President Dr. Phillip Ward as our new executive director. Additionally, former CPME Chair Dr. Timothy Ford is the chair of the CAQ in Podiatric Surgery exam committee. Former APMA President and FIP President Dr. Matthew Garoufalis has become the President of ABPM International, a legally-separate but affiliated organization certifying podiatrists outside the US.

But perhaps even more importantly, our desire is to grow the next generation of leaders for the profession and we have dozens who are rising in the ranks now who will be the profession’s future leaders.

Lastly, the ABPM will not waiver in its obligation to advocate for Diplomates hospital and surgical privileges. Any impedance on a Diplomate of ABPM because of their board certification will be met with swift action from our team of attorneys led by general counsel Keith Greer, Esq., an icon in the podiatric legal space. Notify ABPM HQ if you experience any such discrimination.

As you know, not all the organizations in our profession see our vision. But, these are the same organizations who have neglected their duties to fix these issues in the past. Informed by you, we will continue to do what we believe is right. Personally, I’m honored to represent 5,863 active ABPM Diplomates and hundreds more who are Board Eligible. I wish you a happy, prosperous 2023 and ask that you help us improve the profession for our next generation.

We’re ABPM and we’re moving Podiatry Forward.

Editor's Note

Stephanie Hook, DPM

Happy New Year, Diplomates! This issue is full of so much exciting news!

We are pleased to introduce the Class of 2022 ABPM Diplomates. Congratulations to all of you. We are very proud to have a new partnership with APMSA and are looking forward to a great collaboration with their organization and the students.

Also in this issue, you will see updates on Headquarters and Staff. Please join us in welcoming and congratulating our new Executive Director, Dr. Phillip Ward!

Finally, as always, look to our website at podiatryboard.org or contact Headquarters for any questions or concerns.

On a brief personal note, New Year’s Day has always been my favorite holiday. I enjoy the festivities and the spirit of all of the holidays, but the idea of starting fresh has always held so much meaning to me. No matter how good, bad, or ugly the year before has been, there is always hope for the New Year. I wish all of you the best in 2023.

Upcoming Exams and Updates

Gina M. Painter, DPM

As we move into the next phase of our 2022-2023 examination cycle, we look forward to administering a brand new exam to our diplomates wishing to earn a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) from ABPM. This exam is of course our CAQ in Podiatric Surgery, announced in Summer of 2022.

The response we received upon announcing the CAQ in Podiatric Surgery was overwhelming in the best possible way. Hundreds of diplomates flocked to our website to sign up and many more called, emailed or visited us in person to ask questions and learn more about what this added credential can do for them.

It's important to note that the CAQ in Podiatric Surgery is a distinction available only to podiatrists certified by a CPME-recognized certifying board and who have completed one of a few different types of residency training programs at the beginning of their career, in addition to having a surgical case log for certain diplomates.

We believe in certifying our diplomates at the standard of their residency training, and this ethos informs our approach to our primary Board Certification for all diplomates broadly, and to this credential for certain diplomate types specifically. If they have completed a CPME-approved PMSR-36 program within three years of sitting for the surgery CAQ exam, then there is no case requirement.

For anyone outside the 3-year window or with a different residency under their belt, case submissions are required in tandem with sitting for the CAQ exam. ABPM has long been asked by our own diplomates for opportunities to represent their surgical skills with their ABPM Board Certification and our CAQ in Podiatric Surgery was developed to address those concerns. The Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) is a special distinction created and issued solely by the ABPM to recognize a podiatric physician who has established additional competency beyond board certification in either Amputation Prevention and Wound Care, Podiatric Surgery or Podiatric Sports Medicine.

We also mark the 6th consecutive year of our CAQ in Amputation Prevention and Wound Care, our inaugural added credential, which has been earned by hundreds of our diplomates wishing to showcase their expertise in diabetic foot care and limb salvage. By the numbers, this credential is our most popular post-certification distinction, and for good reason. Some 32 million people in the United States are estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to have diabetes, a number expected to more than double by 2050. The need for proven expertise in diabetic foot care will increase substantially in tandem with this projection, and our CAQ in Amputation Prevention and Wound Care is precisely the credential that can prove that expertise. CAQ holders must pass a psychometrically valid exam and provide proof of their expertise, either in the form of case log, fellowship record or a minimum of 1,000 documented hours of wound care treatment.

Our CAQ in sports medicine also enters its third consecutive exam year with dozens of diplomates holding this specialized credential proving expertise in podiatric sports medicine.

Our CAQ Exams will be held from March 6-11, 2023, with specific dates of choice available to applicants.

We're also pleased to report some 900 resident doctors have signed up for ABPM's In-Training Examinations. These tests evaluate a resident's knowledge, training and experience as they move through their 36-month residency journey. While not required to complete a CPME-approved podiatric medicine and surgery residency (PMSR), performance on these exams often predict performance on board certification exams when the time comes.

Additionally, our In-Training Exams are returned with detailed scoring to identify knowledge gaps and areas for improvement, making them a useful tool for physicians to maximize their progress in residency. Our In Training Exams will be held February 6-25, 2023 for PGY 1s and 2s and February, 14-25, 2023 for PGY 3s and 4s.

ABPM is, at its heart, a testing organization and we continue to demonstrate strength in registrations for our ITE, CAQ and Board Certification exams.

We are ABPM, and we are Certifying Todays Podiatrist.

Treasurer's Report

Nicole M. DeLauro, DPM

Greetings Colleagues. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the ABPM. I am honored to serve as your Treasurer for a second year, and hope that you and your families enjoyed happy and healthy holidays together. The ABPM finished strong in 2022, with a year-to-date (YTD) income of over 3.3 million dollars.

This exceeded our expenses that totaled approximately three (3) million. Strong reserves remain in our investment portfolio despite a volatile market. ABPM continues to expand and prosper with an ever-increasing number of board-certified Diplomates.

The budget committee and I have taken consideration of the expected budgetary changes in 2023. These include increased travel for headquarters staff and the BOD, increased attendance at conferences, and more face-to-face meetings – all to increase awareness to students, residents, and young physicians of the value an ABPM board certification can provide.

We will continue to offer excellence in administration, a streamlined ABPM certification exam, and a maintenance of certification (MOC) process that encourages life-long learning.

Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Update

You asked - ABPM listened! For 2023, there are 3 important updates to MOC

• New instructional videos to help ease navigation of your entire MOC dashboard

• Additional options to gain MOC “points” in the Category 1 and Category 2 Evidence of Cognitive Expertise sections

• A FREE option to fulfill your annual MOC 2-point requirement: “The MOC Evidence Assessment” The “MOC Evidence Assessment” is a 50-question tool to evaluate your expertise in all areas of your ABPM certification. It can be found in your Category 1 options, will provide user feedback, and will be available to you every 3 years on your dashboard! Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is a continuous learning process that is a required and critical component of maintaining ABPM board certification.

MOC eliminates a stressful high-stakes exam every 10 years as well as the submission of cases for review every 3 years. The MOC process is STREAMLINED and EASY TO USE through your member dashboard accessible online or through your mobile device.

MOC is intended to strengthen a Diplomate’s practice and ultimately improve patient safety and clinical outcomes. MOC also furthers ABPM’s goal to protect the health and welfare of the public through an ongoing process of evaluation and certification of the competence of ABPM certified podiatrists.

For remaining questions or concerns please visit your member dashboard at our website https://podiatryboard.org/ or contact ABPM Headquarters.

ABPM Diplomates in Practice

The American Board of Podiatric Medicine would like to congratulate ABPM Diplomate Deepa Jhaveri, DPM on her recent election to the presidency of the Indian Medical Association of New England (IMANE). She will lead the organization in January 2023 for a yearlong term. The association represents medical practitioners of Indian descent practicing in the New England area, organizing social and professional activities for such practitioners and the communities they serve. Dr. Jhaveri has the notable distinction of being the first doctor of podiatric medicine to serve as a president of the association, which has represented physicians since 1978.

Dr. Jhaveri received her DPM degree at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, and completed her residency in Florida, joining ABPM as a diplomate in 2007. Dr. Jhaveri spent time at several private practices before eventually transitioning to hospital-based work, currently with several hospitals in Eastern Massachusetts. Alongside her podiatric medical career, Dr. Jhaveri is active in the non-profit world. She started non-project organization called Women Who Win, serving 5,000 members on various social media platforms across the world. The focus lies on an intersection between health and female empowerment. Using her degree and career contacts to source content from hospitals, Dr. Jhaveri produces and hosts webinars informed by various medical specialties, in particular aimed at youngcareer professionals. Dr. Jhaveri practices in Eastern Massachusetts with particular interest in diabetes, wound care and podiatric surgery. Congratulations Dr. Jhaveri, we look forward to your term with IMANE!

Congratulations New Diplomates!

The American Board of Podiatric Medicine would like to congratulate the newest cohort of Board-certified podiatrists, who sat for their certification exam in October of 2022. Board-certification is a point of pride for many practitioners across the medical field, and this is no less true for Doctors of Podiatric Medicine. ABPM Diplomates are those exceptional physicians have been judged by their peers to have demonstrated, via a rigorous examination process, a fund of knowledge and competence in the areas being tested. The Certificate of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine is a unique achievement, a step well beyond the mandatory education of the podiatrist or state requirements for licensure.

Congratulations diplomates, and welcome to the American Board of Podiatric Medicine!

Additionally, board members also represent ABPM at the country’s premier podiatric medical conferences. Most importantly, the board also works to develop a robust examination program for its podiatric medical Board Certification exam. Other exams include; In-Training Exams for resident podiatric physicians, and Certificates of Added Qualification for existing diplomates and diplomates of other CPME-recognized boards.

This year, one seat on the board of directors will vacate, while a second seat, is open, with an incumbent board member running for a second term, for which an election must be held to decide who will occupy these seats for the next four years. Both seats must be filled by a practicing Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, chosen from among ABPM’s diplomate pool.

The Board of Directors recommends the following slate of candidates for review by the membership. YOUR VOTE IS NOT REQUIRED AT THIS TIME.

Such petitions shall be obtained from the Nominating Committee, must abide by the procedure and eligibility requirements of the Nominating Committee as set forth in the petition and must be received by the Executive Director no later than ninety (90) days (April 14, 2023) prior to the Annual Meeting of Directors (July 14, 2023). If valid nomination petitions are received for election of Directors, a vote of the eligible voting members will be cast by mail ballot at least thirty (30) days prior to the annual meeting of Directors. If none are received or validated, the Nominating Committee’s slate shall be accepted for election by the voting members. We look forward to your participation and to serving you in 2023 and beyond!

ABPM Publishes 2023 Membership Survey

ABPM Publishes 2023 Membership Survey As your certifying board, the American Board of Podiatric Medicine is constantly working to better serve our diplomates at every stage of their career. From residency and fellowship training to board certification, certificates of added qualification, private practice, multispecialty and orthopedic group privileging and hospital privileging, to solo and community based practice, we recognize the exceptional diversity of professionals in our diplomate pool. To that end, the Board invites its diplomates to tell us more about themselves. Our 2023 Membership Survey is less than twenty questions and should take no more than five to ten minutes to complete and will help ABPM improve our service to our diplomates.

We encourage you to scan this QR code, or log onto www.podiatryboard.org and take our survey. It can be completed anonymously and personal information collected from the survey will never be shared with the hospitals, insurance companies or members of the public. We look forward to your input and feedback on all things ABPM!

ABPM & APMSA Partnership

Priya Parthasarathy, DPM

In Late Autumn of 2022, the American Board of Podiatric Medicine became a visionary partner with the American Podiatric Medical Students Association. The American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association (APMSA) is the only national organization representing the collective interests of more than 2,400 podiatric medical student members. Founded in 1954, APMSA protects and advances the rights, interests and welfare of all podiatric medical students across the country.

The APMSA holds direct representation within the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) House of Delegates and advocates for podiatric medical students to the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners (NBPME), Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME), and other stakeholders, affiliates, and organizations. APMSA is a related organization of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

ABPM recognizes the importance of supporting podiatrists at the beginning of their education, especially during the formative years of podiatric medical school," said Board President Lee C. Rogers, DPM. "The practice of podiatric medicine is incredibly diverse, expansive and continually evolves. Our board is a living wealth of knowledge and experience spanning the breadth of the profession that APMSA students can now tap into to better prepare themselves for residency, practice, certification and beyond.

We also look forward to learning firsthand from students what their concerns about podiatry are, so best serve them now, through their residency and into their careers." ABPM's two year partnership begins this year and concludes at the end of 2024. The extended timeline of ABPM's association with the APMSA provides an unparalleled opportunity to connect with and support podiatry students at a critical time in their journey toward becoming physicians.

Announcement of Phill Ward, DPM As Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Phill Ward as the Executive Director for the Board. Dr. Ward’s selection concludes a nationwide search to fill the position that began in June of 2022.

ABPM Board President, Lee C. Rogers, DPM, said, “Dr. Ward is a tireless advocate for the profession. He exemplifies the best of podiatry and I know he will serve our diplomates well as we carry out our mission.”

Phill Ward, DPM has enjoyed a lengthy and successful career as a clinical practitioner and highly respected voice for podiatry for over three decades. Dr. Ward earned his DPM degree from Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery and completed a foot and ankle surgery residency at the VA Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He went on to complete a foot surgery fellowship in Winston-Salem, NC. Dr. Ward has spent much of his working life in his native North Carolina, practicing primarily in the southeastern corner of the state.

"On behalf of the entire Board of Directors and the ad hoc search committee, I am pleased to announce Dr. Ward’s acceptance of the position of Executive Director of ABPM,” said William E. Chagares, DPM, Interim Assistant ED and Ad Hoc Chairperson. Dr. Ward embodies every characteristic desirable to sustain ABPM forward momentum into the next decade. “Our search committee felt he was the best candidate for the position, and we welcome him to the role enthusiastically. Dr. Ward’s Podiatric background combined with his unique skill set in management are an excellent fit for ABPM.”

Outside of his clinical practice, Dr. Ward is a highly accomplished advocate for the profession and has served as president of both the American Podiatric Medical Association and the North Carolina Foot and Ankle Society as well as being a former city councilman for Whispering Pines, NC.

He is an associate faculty member of the Campbell University College of Osteopathy, Buies Creek and is a nationally recognized expert on podiatric coding issues and has made presentations in 36 states and 5 countries. Dr. Ward is committed to increasing the public awareness and utilization of the services that podiatric physicians and surgeons have to offer.

“I look forward to the opportunity to work with the ABPM in advancing the profession. I thank the Board for their confidence in my selection,” said Dr. Ward, after formally accepting the position.

Dr. Ward is board certified with the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the American Board Foot and Ankle Surgery.
