It's grant season here in the Village of Ossining! I am very pleased that our Village has become more and more successful at garnering important grants. What does this mean for you, our residents and business owners? It means that we get funding from agencies which help us support our goals for infrastructure and quality of life enhancements without (for the most part) using Village tax dollars. A recent example is the grant for 80 trees which we planted in Nelson Park and Nelson Sitting Park. In this vein, the Village has the opportunity every three years to apply for CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) funding for projects that will improve the lives of Village residents. After discussing various public needs, we will be making applications for 4 projects (the maximum allowed) as below.
-
Nelson Sitting Park Playground Replacement: The existing playground will be replaced by an inclusive playground, allowing children of all abilities to play together. Playground equipment will be accessible to children with mobility constraints and sensory issues.
-
Spring Street Walkability Improvements (Phase 1): The project will install new sidewalks, curbs and ADA-compliant ramps on both sides of Spring Street from the intersection with Broad Avenue (where it will meet existing improvements) to Lafayette Avenue. The project will enhance walkability of a well-trafficked street.
-
Spring Street Walkability Improvements (Phase 2): This project is an extension of the above project, installing new sidewalks, curbs and ADA-compliant ramps on both sides of Spring Street from the intersection with Lafayette Avenue to the entrance to Scarborough Manor. The Spring Street sidewalk replacements have been divided into two projects in order to maximize the potential for grant support for what is a rather costly project.
-
Playground Replacement and Trail Improvements to the Old Croton Aqueduct between North Malcolm and Ann Streets: Along with a replacement of the existing playground equipment and the railroad-tie "amphitheater", this project will also make improvements to the built trail and staircase along the OCA path between Ann Street and North Malcolm Street.
We are extremely proud of these competitive applications and are hopeful that we can keep the positive momentum moving forward.

There are just a few weeks left to participate in Ossining's EnergySmart Homes program. Many of you have expressed interest in Clean Heating & Cooling as well as the Demand Response program, and we continue to get questions about the Community Solar initiative. A short explanation: Community Solar is a chance for residents without solar panels to take advantage of clean, reliable solar power by purchasing electricity from local solar farms, resulting in electricity savings of up to 10%. This is a great way to lower your carbon footprint and save money. Currently, the Community Solar program splits your bill, with distribution costs appearing on your Con Edison bill and reduced electric charges billed by the Solar Farm (this is why the sign-up process requires your billing information). This dual-bill system is expected to be phased out later this year. If you are interested in this program, or have questions, call (914) 242-4725, or email communitysolar@sustainablewestchester.org.

Please join me and The Ossining Juneteenth Council as we celebrate Juneteenth at the Ossining Riverfront this Saturday, June 19, at 12:00 pm. This event is inspired by the first Juneteenth celebration in Galveston, TX, in 1866, and is curated to recreate that momentous day. The ceremony will focus on history and the importance of voting rights, and will feature spoken word and musical performances.

We will hear from our Village Historian Joyce Sharrock-Cole, as she updates us on the many projects on her "to do" list-- she has certainly been busy! Though we often focus on what's next for Ossining, I hope you will join us to hear more about Joyce's work in our schools, and throughout the larger community, all designed to keep Ossining's history at the forefront.
