Justice & Volunteer Efforts In July

Social Justice is a big part of our Unitarian Universalist values. At Saltwater Church we have 3 groups that focus on current issues locally, regionally, and globally. SCAN! is our group that focuses on Climate Justice. Sound Alliance is our group that focuses on Social Justice. RJOT is our team that focuses on Racial Justice. All three work to provide the community with information and opportunities to Act for Justice.

If you know of an event or activity related to Social Justice that you think would be of interest to members of our community, please email Bubba, our Congregational Administrator, Administrator@SaltwaterChurch.org. They will forward your suggestion onto our group leaders.

Volunteer Efforts

Facilities Team

3rd Wednesdays, 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Church Zoom Room

Saltwater is fortunate to own all our buildings and with that comes great responsibility. Our Facilities Team is committed to working with Marc, our Sexton, and assisting with projects of all sizes and importance. The team consists of volunteers that regularly attend meetings to identify needs, track project progress, and organize community mutual aid events. We also have volunteers that are more "hands-on" and assist with the labor of repairs, painting, and other upkeep.

Drop in on the monthly zoom meeting and learn how you can help keep our buildings beautiful and running smoothly. You can also learn about our Facilities Team and express an interest in our activities in Realm Connect. If you would like to learn more about Realm Connect, schedule a one on one meeting with Bubba.

Ivy Pull

4th Sundays, 11:45am - 1:00pm

In Person - Church Grounds

Come one, come all! Our trees and trails need your help!!

Our Green Sanctuary has lots of Ivy climbing the trees and covering ground, so let's gather to pull the Ivy out, save our trees and open our ground so baby trees may flourish. Bring work gloves and favorite clippers. We gather after coffee and snacks in the church and work for an hour. Youth 8 or older are welcome to join.

Why Do We Pull and Remove English Ivy?

How English Ivy Contributes to Global Warming English Ivy kills trees, the trees that do such a great job of absorbing carbon dioxide. The ivy suffocates the tree trunks and eventually can topple the tree. It spreads over the landscape and prevents new trees from germinating. It creates a monoculture landscape with biodiversity lost and a place unfriendly to native plants and animals. Ivy has been spreading ruthlessly through our forests and destroying habitat all around our church and neighboring park. Removing Ivy frees up growing space for native plants which are so very important as hosts to insects that nourish young salmon. After young salmon smolts migrate to Puget Sound they spend 6 months near the shore feeding on terrestrial insects. Insects do not eat Ivy (note all of those shiny green leaves with no holes). If you find a tree ‘drowning’ in ivy, do not attempt to yank the ivy out of the tree’s branches -you might damage the tree. Instead, cut the vines at shoulder height and again at the base of the tree. Pull the vines away from the lower tree trunk. (Don’t worry about the vines higher up on the tree: once cut they will wither and die). Then, pull up the vines and remove all ivy roots from around the tree trunk in a 6-foot radius, taking care not to damage the tree roots. Keep this circle ivy-free to create a survival ring for the tree.
