Major Lenders Pull Back from Non-Prime Auto as Losses, Delinquencies Reshape Dealer Finance

Major lenders are continuing to pull back from near-prime and non-prime auto lending as rising delinquencies, credit losses, and capital requirements put pressure on portfolio performance. Truist recently exited the segment, selling its $5.5 billion near-prime auto loan portfolio and citing limited profitability.

The shift is expected to make financing more challenging for borrowers with weaker credit profiles, who may face higher interest rates, larger down payments, and stricter underwriting requirements. As traditional lenders scale back, credit unions and specialty finance providers may see increased demand.

For lenders and collections teams, the trend underscores the importance of balancing credit accessibility with risk management while maintaining portfolio quality in an evolving auto lending environment.

50% of Insured Americans Avoid Filing Auto, Home Claims

Rising insurance costs are causing many homeowners to think twice before filing claims. A recent LendingTree survey found that half of insured Americans have avoided filing a home or auto claim due to concerns about premium increases, policy nonrenewal, or claim denials. As a result, many choose to pay for repairs themselves or delay needed work.

The survey highlights growing affordability pressures in the insurance market, as homeowners weigh repair costs against the risk of higher premiums. While avoiding a claim may seem like a cost-saving measure, many respondents reported financial stress, unexpected out-of-pocket expenses, and regret after choosing not to file.

Why Your Collection Strategy Matters as Much as Your Coverage

Collateral protection insurance safeguards a lender when a borrower's auto insurance lapses, but placing coverage is only part of the picture. Uncollected premiums become a cost the institution absorbs, and delinquent CPI accounts are often among the riskiest loans in the portfolio. A consistent strategy protects the balance sheet, supports compliance, and helps borrowers get back on track.

Strategies that work

Reach out early. A quick call, text, or email after an insurance notice can fix many lapses before CPI is ever placed.

Make proof of insurance easy. Offer simple ways to submit proof of insurance, and process refunds promptly when coverage is reinstated.

Offer workable payment options. Adding the premium to the loan balance or setting up a short payment plan often works better than demanding a lump sum.

Train and document. Make sure collectors understand CPI coverage and claims reporting, record every contact, and review trends regularly with your CPI provider.

The bottom line: CPI is a safety net, and a thoughtful collection strategy keeps it strong.
