While there are about 600 Certified CMMC Assessors (CCAs) for over 80,000 companies, the actual number available is much lower. Teams need at least three assessors, reducing capacity to roughly 200 teams at best.

Veterans Cybersecurity Group's (VCSG) Fast Track Program offers an unrivaled ROI driven by a critical industry shortage. By 2027, demand for CMMC assessments will exceed supply by 300%, guaranteeing full utilization for qualified assessors.

Cause of Emerging CCA Shortage

Based on DoD estimates, roughly 28,000 companies will require third-party CMMC Level 2 assessments. The rollout creates a severe bottleneck by 2027

Here are the primary causes of the CMMC assessor shortage:

  • The "Divide by Three" Rule: CMMC regulations require assessment teams of at least three certified personnel. This reduces the pool of ~600 individual assessors to a maximum global capacity of only ~200 functional teams.

  • The Suitability Backlog: Passing the exam is not enough; assessors need a Tier 3 DoD background check to access the eMASS system. Civilians currently face a 9–12 month wait for this adjudication, preventing new talent from entering the workforce.

  • Internal "Hoarding" by Primes: Major defense contractors (e.g., Lockheed, Northrop) are hiring CCAs in-house for internal preparation. These assessors are technically certified but are removed from the public market and unavailable to assess small businesses.

  • Conflict of Interest (COI) Disqualification: Assessors cannot certify companies they have previously consulted for. As CCAs take consulting work to bridge income gaps, they disqualify themselves from assessing those specific clients later.
  •
  • The "Re-Work" Trap: High failure rates among unprepared companies force assessors to conduct partial re-assessments. Every hour spent re-testing a failed client is an hour lost for a new assessment, compounding the backlog.

How much can earn as a CCA in 2025

"Most veterans settle for $90k jobs, but there is a career where you can earn $240,000 in your first year—even with three months off.

The Problem: 80,000 companies need CMMC inspectors, but only 600 exist. Civilians face a 12-month wait for background checks, earning zero while they sit on the bench.

The Solution: You. Your active clearance lets you skip the line and start billing immediately.

We are looking for veterans ready to solve a national security crisis—and finally get paid what you are worth."
