To heal from grief I need to accept.

I created these paintings attempting to process my experiences of fear, confusion, regret, grief… mixed with moments of joy, humor and hope while navigating age, illness and loss of my Mom.

The healing journey can seem very dark, lonely and insurmountable. Along the way there are glimmers of light. Connections…

Sharing, supporting, denying, accepting life's journey to death: dealing with health issues and systems - the chaos, the universality, the strength, the determination and energy.

I began "DNA" and "holding court" with the application of pills to the canvas. I noted that some of the pharmaceuticals absorbed and some did not – some transformed and some did not ... hindering the painting process and aiding the painting process - much like in the body.

I initially painted very darkly then added glimmers of color and light, much the same as we see things when we are confronted with the harsh realities of illness. As we continue the journey, we celebrate the victories no matter how small or large.

Though extremely grateful for my Mom's care, I fear for the availability of good health care for myself, those around me and others - young and old. But, against all odds we can always find glimpses of spirit.

Subsequently I am trying to heal from the loss of my baby sister and brother. I am trying to connect to my mom’s resilience and strength. I am trying to see the glimmers of light.

These three paintings were exhibited at Evanston Art Center and "Broken Silence" was exhibited at Old Courthouse Art Center.

LED synchronized lighting will light these paintings for the first time.

If you missed Emergence Part One: Grief — Here are some Images of my artworks.

an exhibit exploring loss, memory, vulnerability, and the quiet resilience that can emerge through sorrow. Through sculpture, installation, performance, sound, and visual art, the exhibit invited visitors to reflect on a universal human experience that touches every life, regardless of age or background.

The evening featured works by Starline Artists, installations by Warp Corps, CJ Marlin, The Clayworker’s Guild, and Dan McClean, along with performance art by SOAR@Dorr and The Grief Guide, musical soundscapes, and interactive experiences throughout the Factory.

My thoughts about my artwork from Emergence Part One Grief:

Perhaps my search for consciousness is driven by my awareness of death since early childhood. It has lead to my belief that we can communicate with those unconscious or not nearby with our minds. That includes those no longer here and mindful beings we may never know. It supports my belief that we are all more alike than different. These beliefs allow me to accept the passing of those I love. And, that a lifetime, no matter how short or long, is still just a grain of sand in the shores of time. As evidence, imagery of my Dad, my Mom, my brother and others have made themselves known in my art. My sister, who went to join them in December, only two months ago, will undoubtedly make her appearance in my art at some time. My heart is broken, but love, memories and a connection to a universal consciousness will allow me to continue my work.

On a very personal note:

Last weekend we celebrated my sister's life and remembered my brother at Road America. We have commemorative stones including the two "good therapy" members that were only there in spirit — my brother and sister — forever the little kids. My sister left us only 6 months ago on Dec 3. This was our first time here without her physical presence. It was a bittersweet weekend — fun, pain, laughs, tears —all mixed up. This grief series at Starline is perhaps very timely.

Thank you to Starline for the opportunity to share these artworks.

And, of course as always, I can never thank enough my patron, RKD.
