Fall 2021

President's Letter

We are finishing up another trying year. Our hope for next year is to be able to offer more trips, lectures, workshops, and shows for our AGASC members. Our committee chairperson Marti Blair is busy trying to find exciting things to provide to our group.

We are having our Annual Show in December this year. That will be a nice change from our usual summertime slot. It will be our 40th anniversary of the show. We hope you will consider entering the exhibition and or boutique. It is a judged show, not a juried show, so everyone that enters gets their artwork displayed. There should be lots of traffic through the gallery during the holiday season.

The AGASC’s annual holiday party this year is on Dec 19th, to be held at Krista Heron’s beautiful new home. More details will be sent out. Please join us. It’s always a lot of fun.

We will have our next General Meeting on January 16th at Tom Marosz’s studio. Tom will tell us about his dichro making equipment and processes after the meeting.

Also, our election for President and Treasurer are coming up. So, when you get the email notices please vote.

Thanks,

Jack Wade, President AGASC

What were you doing during the Lockdown?

Catch up with some of our members to see just what they did during the last year.

Paul Messink New Video Works
Since many of my galleries were closed, I focused on education during COVID. In the last half of 2020 I taught two workshops online, through Glass eMotions in Ottowa Canada. Then in 2021 I recorded my entire workshop in a series of 4 video courses - resulting in a total of 30 hours of video content evenly divided between instruction and demos. That included lots of filming and editing, but it's finally "in the can" (although we don't use film cans anymore!). For more info on the new Creating Dimension 4-course series, check it out at CoachellaGlassworksEdu.com The entire 30 hour series is now available for a bundled price of $299, but AGASC members can get 10% off using coupon code AGASCMEMBER.
Here's a video look at "The Making of Creating Dimension" and the recording studio that I had setup in the Coachella Valley Art Center:  https://youtu.be/QRKK6ubcYTk
I'm planning to resume live workshops in early 2022 in my studio (for fully vaccinated artists) - check out PaulMessink.com for dates.

With the video series now complete, I'll be taking a little time off, then will return to making art - I'm even starting to dabble in something completely new!

The prize for the Open Glass Artists category is a £100 Gift Voucher for Warm Glass UK, to spend on a huge range of glass fusing supplies and education. The Open Glass Artists category was judged by internationally renowned glass artist Silvia Levenson.

Winner | Open Glass Artists 2021 Lori Polik

Lori Polak "The Power of Play"

I find both the colours and the interplay of humour and imagination of Mexico's celebrations captivating, especially the tradition of the giant puppets known as ‘Mojigangas’. In San Miguel de Allende in the State of Guanajuato, during cultural festivities and weddings, these giant puppets tower above you leading ceremonies or joyful celebrations through the narrow streets. They are known as "Callejoneadas.” My current body of work, "The Power of Play," arises from these ‘Mojigangas’. I invite one to abandon the constraints and boundaries we face today while activating a sense of play, which leads to spontaneity and delight. I view the magical freedom of imagination as a potential opening to different cultural traditions - so needed in today’s prevalent nationalistic ideology.

Technique: Lost Wax Casting

Type of glass used: Gaffer Casting Crystal

Type of kiln used: Skutt

Country: Mexico

About the Artist:

Lori is an established glass artist whose fascination for art surfaced as a young child. Some of her earlier memories centre around spending long hours wandering through native artisan markets and local exhibits on the streets of Mexico. She was born and raised by European parents in Mexico, Lori now resides in La Jolla in California – where she works and teaches from her home studio. Her future plans include evolving as an artist, sharing her passion for getting creative with glass and textiles.

"Winning The Glass Prize means shedding light on a group of overlooked cultures and representing something much greater than myself — showing gratitude for Mexican festive traditions. Being brought up in Mexico, the Mojigangas have continued to live in my imagination and furthermore, The Glass Prize 2021 would validate the importance of learning about other traditions and embracing world cultures."

The 'Tree of Hope' Installation

tree of hope and me1.jpg

'The Tree of Hope' at Scripps Anderson Cancer Center Lobby in La Jolla, Ca

In June 2021, Susan Hirsch completed this ten foot Tree of Hope installation at Scripps Anderson Cancer Center in La Jolla. Its four levels of led highlighted levels change colors every 15 seconds and reveal three new phrases of hope with a total of nine that doctors chose to bring hope and inspiration for those in treatment.

Two years ago Susan was asked to submit a proposal for an interactive 'Tree of Hope' for Scripps. After a year of revising concepts with sketches and then a working model, she was given the contract. That was March 2020, just as Covid started shutting down everything. After a year it was given a go. The original concept was motion and touch reactive but after Covid, it was determined to operate and cycle on its own. Every step in the two month construction had some kind of a challenge but Susan with the amazing assistance of Mariah Conner resolved them one by one. They worked in a vacant unit adjacent to Susan's Glass studio. The design was created in illustrator and water jet cut at Franklin Industries in Poway. Susan's brother in Indiana manufactured the standoffs she designed. Susan, Tom Marosz and Mariah installed the tree on a Saturday while the treatment center was closed. It took six hours to get the tree hung and the five mini computers and mainframe all connected to control the tree. Lisa Ivacson of NU-leds designed and programed the lighting.

Finally a real workshop in person!!

Tom Marosz hosted 2 Cold-working Workshops

Tom Marosz, who has some of the best cold working equipment hosted 2 weekend workshops in August and October for members of the AGASC. Always great to learn how to use the variety of tools at Tom's. We all brought a few pieces that we wanted to refine. All students were able to see what might be best for the work they brought and also try some new techniques on crystal Tom provided. With a limit of 6 students, we all got to spend some quality time refining our work.
