Pre-Apprenticeship Programs Help Prepare Individuals to Enter Registered Apprenticeships

The Advance 2 Apprenticeship Program (A2A) provides universal design training to individuals with and without disabilities to prepare for a Registered Apprenticeship.

Throughout the program, the students have been working on Power Skills such as effective communication, professionalism, and problem resolution. Thus far, all of the students have completed and received their OSHA10 Certification.

Recently, the students got to craft ball peen hammers at the MVCC CNC Machining Lab and received a tour of Riverhawk. Students are currently preparing for Interview Day with companies including Wolfspeed, Danfoss, and Indium.

The WDB's Regional Apprenticeship Development and Readiness (RADAR) grant project has assisted the students in obtaining appropriate interview attire to help ensure success at job interviews. The students will end their experience with career exploration with MVCC's Virtual Reality Oculus and a graduation stipend from RADAR.

Manufacturing Businesses: Do you need help

upskilling your Workforce?

The Workforce Development Board of Herkimer, Madison & Oneida (WDB/HMO) has partnered with the NYCAN (NY College Apprenticeship Network) grant to reimburse on-the-job training costs for advanced manufacturing companies that have less than 50 employees and a registered apprentice program.

Wages can be reimbursed at 50% up to $25 an hour for six months of on-the-job training (OJT) with minimum paperwork.

The undirected funding provides many benefits for small to medium-sized manufacturing companies and ensures the apprentice is trained in accordance with the company’s standards and procedures.

If you would like to know how your company can take advantage of this funding or know of a company that would benefit, please contact Alice Savino at asavino@working-solutions.org

RADAR Grant Staff Tours Crystal Geyser

"RADAR grant staff recently had the opportunity to join the Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie (FMS) Business Services Consortium on a tour of Crystal Geyser. Crystal Geyser is a 100% pure natural alpine spring water bottling company.

"One of the messages they share is that they bottle straight from the source – we didn’t understand the extent of what that meant until our tour. Crystal Geyser bottles natural spring water right at the spring source without trucking (transporting the water to a location to be bottled) or blending (blending the spring water with water from other locations). Crystal Geyser sources their water from a spring underground and transports it through a series of pipelines directly to the bottle we drink from.

"Another interesting fact about Crystal Geyser is that they care about their carbon footprint. Rather than shipping their product across the country, they only ship within their region. This means that the Crystal Geyser products we see in our local stores come directly from their location in Johnstown, NY. In addition to this, Crystal Geyser has built and is currently running PET recycling (rPET) plants. They recycled the equivalent of 1.7 billion Crystal Geyser bottles worth of plastic this year and used the material to manufacture more bottles. On average, a Crystal Geyser bottle of water is made up of 50% recycled plastic.

"It was so interesting to get a behind-the-scenes view of the manufacturing process involved in bottling the water we see on our shelves! Not only that but learning about all of the opportunities and benefits for their employees got us excited to refer some of our participants.

Apprenticeship Program Success: Congratulations, Graduates!

"The Workforce Development Board is pleased to announce the graduation of Cohort 1 of Advance to Apprenticeship (A2A). A2A is an employment initiative through the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities to improve access to Apprenticeship programs for people with and without disabilities within the manufacturing industry.

"This would not have been possible without the collaboration of the Workforce Development Boards, RADAR grant, Mohawk Valley Community College, and the University of Rochester.

"We would also like to thank Nicole Sortino, the Disability Resource Coordinator from the Workforce Development Board's NYSCION grant, who graciously stepped up and showed out as the instructor for A2A.

"Students had the opportunity to apply for and interview at Wolfspeed, Indium and Danfoss. It has been just a joy to see the growth and overall success of each participant in the program, and we look forward to supporting them in their journey to becoming Registered Apprentices."
