Fostering a culture of encounter...

Good morning Kristin,

Last week's article in The Seattle Times highlighted Seattle's status as the least religious large metro area in the U.S. Far from being discouraged, this data underscores the vital role of Catholic education in our archdiocese. We are committed to creating an environment that fosters a culture of encounter within such a secular context. This endeavor, while challenging, involves cultivating a space that not only educates in faith but also actively engages students in embodying our faith's values, regardless of their faith background.

We aim to instill in students a deep understanding of their responsibility as neighbors to the marginalized and disenfranchised, reflecting the Good Samaritan's unconditional compassion and action. Our schools are open to all, as we strive to enlarge the size of our tent, sharing the faith with our parish members and proposing the Gospel to students and families who may not yet believe. Pope Francis, in his encyclical letter "Fratelli Tutti," reflecting on the Good Samaritan, noted, "Paradoxically, those who claim to be unbelievers can sometimes put God’s will into practice better than believers." It is a reminder that we have Catholic schools not because our students are Catholic, but because we are Catholic. We have Catholic schools because we believe that "Jesus Christ provides the most comprehensive and compelling example of the realization of full human potential,” and that we are called to share this conviction with all nations.

I am not discouraged by last week's article; instead, I am reinvigorated in my belief that our Catholic schools are essential. In the face of this secular landscape, our Catholic schools emerge not just as educational institutions but as beacons of hope. By embracing the challenges of our time, we reaffirm our commitment to a mission that extends beyond academic achievement to the formation of individuals who are compassionate, socially responsible, and driven by a sense of justice. We are called to be a living testament to the power of faith in action, demonstrating that the values of Catholic education can flourish, transforming hearts and minds. Our resolve is strengthened, knowing that through our efforts, we contribute to a society that values care, solidarity, and the common good above all. As we navigate the complexities of our time, let us do so inspired by a faith that engages, educates, and enlivens the community we serve.

If you have not already, please register for next week's Principal Meeting at St. Thomas. Here is a look at the agenda for this meeting. We will provide an update related to Partners in the Gospel and the afternoon will feature a presentation from Ignacio Davila, who will present on AI and offer insights into how we might incorporate this in our schools going forward.

With gratitude,
