(Brooklyn, NY) -- Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced today that he will bring sweeping voting rights legislation that ensures free, fair, and secure elections to a debate on the Senate floor.
Senator Schumer will use congressional rules to evade an obstructionist GOP filibuster to have a Senate floor showdown on the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act by Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn issued the following statement in response:
"The right to vote is the very core of our democracy, and we are witnessing an unabashed assault on these sacred rights with Republicans enacting restrictive voter legislation. Many of these draconian voting laws disproportionately disenfranchise voters of color.
As President Joe Biden said, 'Will we choose democracy over autocracy?' The House has decisively voted to defend our Democracy. The Brooklyn Democratic Party applauds Democratic lawmakers for advancing the voting rights bills and calls on the entire U.S. Senate to follow suit and vote to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
The right for every American to vote fairly should not be a partisan issue and must be protected at all costs."
