City Park, Sunday Farmers Market in New OrleansNovember 24, 2024

8 am - 12 pm

New Orleans City Park

Tad Gormley Stadium

Marconi Drive @ Navarre Ave.

Directions and Parking

The Sunday Market is located in the parking lot of Tad Gormley Stadium at the corner of Marconi and Navarre. While the parking lot is closed off to house the market, there is plenty of parking along Marconi and surrounding streets. Please be diligent about following parking signs and only park in clearly marked spaces with perpendicular markings. DO NOT park in the bike lanes, as this makes our market space unsafe to bikers and pedestrians and threatens our ability to continue operating the market here. No parking allowed on the neutral ground. Please don't pull up into the market driveway for recycling pick ups or drop offs. Thank you for understanding!

RTA Bus Route 27: Louisiana passes right by market! Click here to view more details about route 27.

No Cash? No Problem!

All of our vendors accept cash and tokens. Swipe for tokens on-site at the orange Welcome Tent with debit, credit, or EBT SNAP.

Shop with SNAP!

Market Umbrella implements fresh food incentive programs such as Market Match, which doubles SNAP dollars spent at market for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. Starting January 1st, 2023, market match will be unlimited, allowing us to match each EBT dollar being swiped for on-site at the orange Welcome Tent.

Between June and the end of November, certified market vendors accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers for both seniors and WIC participants. Market Umbrella is able to double FMNP benefits with tokens on-site at the Welcome Tent.

NATIONAL SARDINES DAY

November 24th recognizes these silver little fishes on National Sardines Day. They may not swim right up to your plate, but they sure do pack in the flavor.

While some people are afraid to taste these small, silver fish, others consider sardines a delicious snack enjoyed on their own or with crackers.

Sardines are several types of small, oily fish, related to herrings. While we might be most familiar with sardines packed in cans, some enjoy fresh sardines grilled. This small fish can also be pickled and smoked, too. When canned, they can be packed in water, olive, sunflower or soybean oil or tomato, chili or mustard sauce.

The term sardine was first used in English during the beginning of the 15th century, possibly coming from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia where there was an abundance of sardines.

Sardines are a great source of vitamins and minerals.

From one’s daily vitamin allowance containing:

  • 13 % B2
  • .25 % niacin
  • 150% vitamin B12
  • phosphorus
  • calcium
  • potassium
  • iron
  • selenium
  • omega-3fatty acids
  • vitamin D
  • protein

- B vitamins are important in helping to support proper nervous system function and are used for energy metabolism.

- Omega 3 fatty acids reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular disease and regular consumption may reduce the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease and can even boost brain function as well as help lower blood sugar levels.

Relative to other fish commonly eaten by humans, sardines are very low in contaminants, such as mercury.

Sardine oil is used in the manufacturing of paint, varnish and linoleum.

The sardine canning industry peaked in the United States in the 1950s. The Stinson Seafood plant in Prospect Harbor, Maine, which was the last large sardine cannery in the United States, closed its doors on April 15, 2010, after 135 years in operation..

November 24thCelebrated Birthdays

Grace Darling - 1815

In 1838, a ship collided with rocks along the shore during a storm near the lighthouse Grace Darling's father kept. In the morning, her family discovered survivors who had found some refuge on the remains of the wreckage. The lighthouse keeper and his daughter set out in a rowboat on the rough seas to rescue them. The legendary story made Grace Darling a British heroine.

Frances Hodgson Burnett - 1849

The novelist is best known for her children's novels Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Little Prince, and The Secret Garden.

Scott Joplin - 1868

While his exact birth date is unknown, the prolific ragtime composer and singer earned him the title of "King of Ragtime." His most popular composition, Maple Leaf Rag, also brought him a steady income until the end of his young life.

Robert Sengstacke Abbott - 1870

In 1905, the attorney and publisher established The Chicago Defender. It quickly grew into the most circulated black-owned newspaper in the United States.

Bessie Blount Griffin - 1914

As an innovative scientist, nurse, and physical therapist, Blount used her experience during World War II to improve the lives of veterans. She received several patents, including one that is still in use today.

William F. Buckley - 1925

The editor founded the conservative magazine National Review in1955.

 1941: 1132 Annunciation Street

This triangular-shaped building purportedly dates back to 1851 and was the home of the Annunciation Market. It was listed in the 1858 city directory at the intersection of Annunciation and Gaienne Streets which makes this a victim of the 1955 construction of the Pontchartrain Expressway.

From 1924 to 1930 it was home to Bangs and Sons Meat Market run by Otto J. Bangs and Francis William Bangs.

Bayou St. John + Over the Rhine

This photograph shows the newly completed bridge over Bayou St. John that was constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) which linked New Orleans to the Spanish Fort restaurant Over the Rhine. The restaurant was opened by Otto Touche in 1880 and was later operated by his son Fred. It was located directly across the bayou from the Spanish Fort amusement park. The restaurant closed in 1949.

1890s: New Orleans Waterfront

An undated and unattributed photograph from the archives of the Wisconsin Historical Society of a fairly typical scene along the New Orleans waterfront. Longshoremen are dealing with a large cargo of cotton probably bound for Liverpool aboard one of the large ocean-going steamers that line the port. Each of their large hand-trucks carries a 500-pound bale of cotton.

On the left we see the vessel in question being loaded from that starboard side while a tugboat and barge replenish the vessels fuel from the port side.

A recent post referred to the informal competition between the British steamers to see which could carry the largest load of American cotton back to Liverpool. One such ship left New Orleans with December 7, 1882, with 10,361 bales of cotton (5,180,500 pounds), 12,000 bushels of wheat, and 2,650 wooden staves. This cargo was worth $642,000 (about $18.5 million today).

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon,November 25

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

We're pleased to announce that Kid Cafe', a free after-school meal program for youth- ages 18 and under, is now underway. In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, No Kid Hungry, and Share Our Strength, the program ensures that low-income children at afterschool program sites across New Orleans have access to nutritious meals during the school year. Kid Cafe' meals are available Monday through Friday from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at multiple NORD rec centers. For more information, call us at 504-658-3052.

At that stroke of midnight on November 21, 2024, oenophiles all over France will begin their jubilant celebration in honor of the end of the harvest and the uncorking of the Beaujolais Nouveau. Hundreds of events throughout France will be held with fireworks, music, and, of course, tastings, as “tout le monde” vie to sample the current batch of Beaujolais Nouveau - light, fruit-driven wines made with barely fermented Gamay grapes that are best consumed as soon as possible - literally. But, never fear, there are 3 different quality levels of Beaujolais above Nouveau and these are the ones we get excited about!

The entry-level wines that are simply labeled Beaujolais, are made from grapes grown throughout the Beaujolais region, mainly in the south. These also tend to be on the fruit-forward side and are meant to be enjoyed in the first year or two after the vintage. Beaujolais-Villages wines are based on Gamay grapes that were grown in the northern part of the Beaujolais region, specifically 38 permitted villages. And Cru Beaujolais are grown in any of ten specific northern locales whose typically granitic soils (though they are far from uniform in composition and character) can produce the most age-worthy and complex of all red wines from Beaujolais. So, needless to say, the least expensive wines generally come from the south, and the more expensive and age-worthy wines come from the north. And if this was all you learned about Beaujolais, you’d know enough to dive in and start learning by tasting - but as always goes with wine, a lot of the fun is in the details.

We are here to help with those details as we taste different wines from the 3 categories and talk about the terroir that makes them special. What is Beaujolais Blanc? What is the difference between a village-level wine and a cru? What's the stylistic difference between one Cru and another?? David Sobiesk will present as we learn about one of our favorite regions and pick out some of the best wines ever to pair with your holiday meals!  The event is sold out but you can join our waitlist here, Gamay

New Orleans holiday parade 2024 will fill the streets with hot-air balloons. See the details.

Children's Hospital sponsors this procession, featuring Frosty, Rudolph and more.

For the third year, the Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade will get the yuletide season rolling, Crescent City style. With 30 themed floats, ridden by costumers tossing a blizzard of throws, plus 27 bands and marching groups, the parade is like a preview of Carnival. But there’s a difference.

No other New Orleans procession includes giant lighter-than-air balloons, bobbing along the route amid the other attractions. In the past two years, a 40-foot Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, a gargantuan candy cane, a snowflake, a gingerbread man, a Hanukkah ornament and Frosty the Snowman have floated over the crowds.

This year, parade producer Barry Kern promises there will be a few new balloons in the mix. In addition to floats bearing a red toy train, a Christmas alligator and Santa on his sled, Kern said parade-goers should look for giant self-propelled snow globes this year.

The parade rolls through the French Quarter and the Central Business District at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7.

Patients at Children’s Hospital are creating custom-decorated plastic ornaments that will serve as signature throws this year. Each ornament will be marked with the patient’s name.

Rolling fundraiser

Unlike the Mardi Gras season, during which commercial advertising is prohibited, the floats in the holiday parade are sponsored by businesses and organizations. All proceeds from the commercial tie-ins benefit Children’s Hospital. WDSU television plans a telethon-style broadcast to accompany the event.

With support from the state’s Explore Louisiana tourism campaign, the parade is meant to help promote New Orleans as a holiday season destination, according to parade organizers.

Grinchy power lines and rain

The first two Children’s Hospital Holiday Parades succeeded despite complications. During the first parade, the hovering balloons were forced to limbo beneath streetcar power lines on St. Charles Avenue, slowing the procession. The problem led to a new route in the second year. Rain pelted the 2023 parade, though the event still drew crowds.

Unlike in past years, there will be no post-parade party in Lafayette Square.

The parade will line up on Elysian Fields Avenue near Washington Square Park. It will proceed uptown on North Peters Street, merge onto Decatur Street, turn right on Canal Street, U-turn at Burgundy Street, turn right on Tchoupitoulas Street, ending at Andrew Higgins Drive.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
