“Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed.” (1John 3:2a)

Dear People of Ascension,

This weekend we celebrate Halloween, All Saints Day, and then (transferred to next Wednesday) All Souls. Many call it a time when the veil between the worlds- between this life and whatever is beyond this life- is thin. We dress up in scary costumes as if to concretize, confront and laugh at our biggest fears (and soothe them with chocolate). We give thanks for the great exemplars of our faith, like Mary Magdalene, Bridget, Francis of Assisi and Oscar Romero, whose stories inspire and encourage us. We remember “those we love but see no longer”, our own beloved dead, including some with whom we may have unfinished business in our loss. The Day of the Dead tradition invites them to come near.

The veil is thin but the time is thick with meaning, feeling, mystery. We ponder the mystery of death and the wonder of communion. We journey together, connected with those we know and those we will never know. We are dependent on those who have gone before us, those among whom we live now. We draw our strength from community and sometimes we also struggle deeply in our life with one another and with God. Together, we are called to take our part in God’s great work of reconciling, healing and blessing the world, that those who come after us may live.

The verse from 1 John is an evocative one for me. We are God’s children now- loved, claimed and held in the everlasting arms. We are also called to grow more fully into Christ, sharing in the work of justice and mercy, formed into a body to do together what we could never do in isolation. We are on the way, on the journey, in the mystery. It does not yet appear what we will be, but God is working with us, in us and through us. Let us open our hearts and pay attention, with thanksgiving.

Blessings of this tender time, dear friends.

Liz

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

We welcome people to our space, answer questions about the Church and our activities, and are available as they walk around, sit, or pray. Sometimes you get to enjoy hearing a Voices of Ascension concert rehearsal or organ practice as an added bonus! Training with be provided. If interested in exploring further, please contact Madonna Stack Barker at (m.stack@rcn.com) or the Church office (212-254-8620 or info@ascensionnyc.org).

Immigration Legal Support Fund – Recently our diocese announced a new Immigration Legal Support Fund to support immigrant families in our congregations and neighborhoods throughout the Diocese of New York. The Legal Fund will help those navigating immigration under urgent and vulnerable circumstances to access legal resources. We're starting with a $50,000 contribution from the Bishop’s discretionary funds. Help us to match this amount to keep families together. With your support, we can do more so that no one faces the system alone. Your contribution makes possible same-day response, family preparedness, limited-scope appearances, and urgent filings. You can contribute here. To learn more about the Immigration Legal Support Fund Click here.

Your Pantry Needs You!

Ascension Outreach Inc. needs additional volunteer participation. The program is robust and developing in some great ways- and we need more hands-on help. Won’t you consider helping strengthen our service to our neighbors?

Upcoming Dates: October 17 & November 7 & 21. If you have questions or wish to join us, please contact Fr. Ed: fatherchinery@ascensionnyc.org, or 732-910-7017.
