Project Update: Collins Canal Water Main Improvements

Notice Date: Friday, May 15, 2026

What's Happening

The contractor is installing a water main beneath 22 Street and Park Avenue using a trenchless construction method. Work begins with drilling a pilot hole, which is a small and precisely guided path created under the roadway. This step allows crews to confirm the correct alignment and depth of the water main before the hole is enlarged and the pipe is installed.

Work Zones

Throughout the project, crews will alternate between the two pipe locations as outlined below.

  • Work Zone 1: Pipe starts on 23 Street, crosses through the Collins Canal and exits at 2300 Pine Tree Drive.

  • Work Zone 2: Pipe starts on 22 Street, crosses through the Collins Canal and exits in front of Miami Beach Senior High School, located at 2201 Prairie Avenue.

Traffic Impacts: Phase 1

Traffic management for this phase includes a partial westbound lane closure on 22 Street, just west of Park Ave. Additionally, select parking spaces within the work zone will be temporarily unavailable during this phase.

Timeline

The contractor is scheduled to perform work on Saturday, May 16, 2026, during the approved weekend construction hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Any additional weekend work may be requested, but will require prior approval and advance notification to the community.

Regular construction activity is permitted Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please know that this project is anticipated to take approximately four months to complete, barring any unforeseen delays or circumstances.

What to Expect

  • Moderate levels of construction noise are expected during the day.
  • Partial sidewalk closures throughout the construction zone will be in place. Please follow all posted signage.
  • Access to the Valero gas station will be maintained at all times.
  • Select parking spaces adjacent to each work zone will be temporarily unavailable.
  • Machinery and workers will be present on the job site. Residents and visitors are advised to use caution when crews are present and to follow all posted signage.

Project Overview & Benefits

The City of Miami Beach began improvements on two subaqueous water mains that cross the Collins Canal just south of Dade Boulevard between 22 and 23 Streets.

The project involves replacing two inactive yet essential subaqueous water mains with new, larger‑diameter pipelines designed to improve system capacity and support long‑term infrastructure needs. Once completed, the upgraded mains will provide increased flow to meet the city’s growing demand and enhance water distribution throughout the surrounding area.
