MANY THANKS TO PSECU FOR SPONSORSHIP OF THE COMMUNITY CALLER! | | |
“You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.”
Dear Friends,
This quote from Charlie “Tremendous” Jones is near and dear to my heart. How insightful of him, and how right! We are changed and enriched by people, new ideas, new information, and stories.
There’s so much to learn through stories from around the world; stories of the past, present, and even the future; true stories; and stories that can only be imagined. One of the best books I’ve read this year is Theo of Golden by Allen Levi. While it’s a fictional story, Theo of Golden reads like a lesson in creating a life of love, meaning, and legacy. The main character, Theo, models how to listen deeply and without judgment. He exemplifies the dignity of humility and the healing power of human connection. His generosity is matched by his gratitude. Theo is sincere and holds no hidden agendas in his relationships. He simply cares about people. He values them and finds the beauty deep within each person he encounters. There are some twists and turns along the way, but the story is worth every high and low, right up to the very end. In fact, a follow-up book, Ellen of Golden, is in the works, and I can’t wait!
As works in progress, each of us needs to keep reading, learning, and connecting with others. Those practices are essential to our emotional, professional, and spiritual growth. And fortunately, there are dozens of opportunities to connect with others through community service, many of which you’ll find throughout this month’s edition of The Community Caller. Who we become five years from now really does depend on what we choose to do today. So, let’s keep reading. Let’s keep meeting people. Let’s keep learning from one another. Let’s strive to be like Theo in a world full of Pearce Glissens! Finally, thank you to PSECU for sponsoring this platform that allows Leadership Harrisburg Area to facilitate connections and share opportunities for creating a life of love, meaning, and legacy. We appreciate your investment in our community!

Here & Heard - SANKOFA African American Theatre Company
September 26, 2026 | Appell Center | 3:00 PM
There are stories we tell everyone. There are stories we tell only to the people we trust. And there are stories we carry quietly until someone gives us a reason to speak. What happens when we create a space where those stories can be heard? Join us for Here & Heard: One Story at a Time, an afternoon celebrating the transformative power of original storytelling through poetry, dramatic performance, improv, and more. Featuring storytellers from Central Pennsylvania, New York City, Baltimore, and beyond. Here & Heard brings together a dynamic collection of voices and perspectives exploring: Identity. History. Grief. Resilience. Joy. Healing. Transformation. This is more than an afternoon of performances. It is an invitation to listen, connect, reflect, and celebrate the stories that shape us. Here & Heard asks us to consider what happens when we do exactly that—when we gather the pieces of our experiences, share them through art, and discover new possibilities together.

Night of the Living Dead LIVE
October 9 - 31, 2026 | Open Stage | Various Showtimes
Six strangers in a lonely farmhouse, surrounded by brain-eating zombies – what could go wrong? Night of the Living Dead Live is a fun and hilarious re-imagining of George A. Romero’s legendary classic. Set in 1968 and presented in all black and white, it literally feels like the film has been brought to life and placed onstage. The play lovingly examines the movie itself, the period in which it was made, and the film’s undying influence on the horror genre. More than just a recreation of the story, the play celebrates the history and influence of the movie. Through a series of multiple endings, the characters are all faced with different issues and challenges while desperately trying to survive the night. However, their contrasting personalities and agendas always seem to prevent the group from working together. Which leaves us all wondering: Could anyone survive a night of the living dead? It provides a safe and understanding environment where grieving children and families can connect with others who share similar experiences. The Caring Place has immediate openings in our upcoming peer support groups for grieving children and families at our Camp Hill Center. Our support groups are no-cost, not insurance-based, and available whether a loss is recent or has occurred some time ago. These groups provide peer support for both adults and children. For onsite groups, at least one grieving child and one adult must attend, but additional family members can join as well. In addition, the Caring Place offers online virtual support groups for young adults. If you or someone you know is interested in receiving the support of the Caring Place, please call 866-613-4673 or contact us via our website at Highmark Caring Place.
For Community Leaders: Would you be willing to help us reach additional families who may need support by displaying our brochures in your workplace or community spaces? We can provide a brochure stand and brochures to you. We also provide trainings, presentations, and consultations on grief at no cost. If you are interested, please reach out to Missy Reagan at
