Did you know that veterans with qualifying service-connected disabilities may be eligible for thousands of dollars in annual property tax savings?

Minnesota and Wisconsin have very different tax benefit programs. I've recorded two short videos explaining how each state's program works, who qualifies, and how to apply.

MINNESOTA: Veterans Property Tax Exclusion

Who qualifies?

  • 70% or greater service-connected disability: Up to $150,000 excluded from the home's taxable market value.
  • 100% permanent and total disability: Up to $300,000 excluded from taxable market value.
  • The veteran generally must be honorably discharged and own and occupy the property as their homestead.
  • Certain surviving spouses and primary family caregivers may also qualify.

How to apply:

Apply through the county assessor's office by December 31 for taxes payable the following year.

Wisconsin offers qualifying disabled veterans a refundable state income tax credit covering 100% of eligible property taxes paid on their primary residence.

Who qualifies?

  • Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating or qualifying individual unemployability.
  • Veterans who entered active duty as Wisconsin residents or established at least five consecutive years of Wisconsin residency after entering active duty.
  • Veterans who currently reside in Wisconsin and meet the military service requirements.
  • Certain unremarried surviving spouses may also qualify.

How to apply:

Contact a County or Tribal Veterans Service Office to begin eligibility certification through the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs. Once certified, claim the credit through the Wisconsin income tax return.

I've had the honor of helping over 100 veterans with home financing in just the last three years. My father is a Vietnam veteran, so helping military families is something I'm personally passionate about.

If you're working with a veteran purchasing a home in Minnesota or Western Wisconsin, I'd love to help you explore their VA financing options and make sure they're aware of these additional benefits.

Program eligibility and savings vary. Minnesota reduces taxable market value; Wisconsin provides a refundable income tax credit for qualifying property taxes paid. Eligibility must be verified with the appropriate state agency.

The eligibility details were checked against the official Minnesota Department of Revenue and Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs program pages.

Send me the two video links, and I can place them into the email with clear, separate Minnesota and Wisconsin video links so it's ready for your Realtor database.
