Bridgewater State University's Project EarthView Visits Second Graders
at Dr. E. Joseph Laliberte Elementary School
On February 10th, Bridgewater State University’s Project EarthView paid a visit to the second-graders of Laliberte Elementary. A collaborative effort between BSU’s Department of Geography and the Center for the Advancement of STEM Education, this project was created to teach students about the world. However, their main goal is to emphasize the need for more geography instruction in primary and secondary schools.
While Project EarthView began with one hand-painted, 20-foot inflatable globe, the program now includes a 22-foot satellite imaged globe and giant floor maps. They have also expanded their educational outreach to include workshops appropriate for adolescents in high school. Project EarthView has reached over 100,000 students in Massachusetts, as well as been given the opportunity to travel to the State House in Boston and participate in several regional and national academic conferences.

Thank you, Project EarthView, for teaching our students about the places that make up the world!

Historical Tidbit:

Seth Dean

Seth Dean was born in Raynham, Massachusetts, on January 7, 1757. At age 17, when the British force occupied Boston, he volunteered to be a Revolutionary War soldier. He served as a private in 1775 under Captain John King, in 1777 under Captain Jonathan Shaw, and in 1780 under Captain Noah Hall.

Seth was in the first campaign of the war, at the Battle of Bunker Hill and with the troops when the British evacuated Boston. He watched the British board their ships and leave the harbor. "Then Washington marched in with his forces and took possession of the town."

He married 20-year-old Mercy Shaw, also born and raised in Raynham, on October 29, 1780. They had ten children, all born in Raynham.

Raynham death records show Seth Dean died of old age, a widowed farmer, on April 28, 1848. He was 90 years and 10 months.

Climate Can-Do:
Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles are a more sustainable way for people to get to where they are going. These vehicles offer less maintenance and repairs, less expensive when it comes to fueling, and most importantly cause less pollution.

In Massachusetts the Zero Emissions Vehicle commission ,or ZEV, was established in 2015 and is working to help support the zero emission vehicle adoption in Massachusetts. Their overall goal is to promote zero emission vehicles, also known as ZEV’s. These vehicles include fuel cell, plug in, or battery electric cars, buses, and vans.
When it comes to making more charging stations for electric vehicles, companies like Chargepoint are offering funding in order to install more of them. This would help make it more accessible for those who want this sustainable transportation. It would make it easier to charge their cars with more available charging stations in Massachusetts.

If you want to find out more about ZEV commission or would like to see more about the funding going into electric vehicle charging stations, read the links provided.

Violet the Clown Visits Students!
Lillie B. Merrill Elementary School

On February 8th, Violet the Clown was a special guest at Lillie B. Merrill Elementary School. She told stories, played with magic, and really interacted with her young audience. They took photos, shared some laughs, and a few children were given the opportunity to act as her assistants! Everyone had a great time.
At the end of her performance, Violet removed her makeup and wig in front of the students. Her goal was to show them that they shouldn't be afraid of clowns, because clowns are just people! Sometimes what appears to be frightening is less scary when it removes its mask and allows you to understand the truth behind it. A good lesson for them to learn, and what fun they had while doing it. Thanks, Violet!

Equilibrium

A worthy quest for our lives:
Balance between all factors, finding equilibrium.
Work and family; Meeting physical and spiritual needs. To find work that provide for necessities, and be challenged intellectually.
Have companions who understand and encourage us, as well as those that make us think differently. To exercise, and rest. To eat nourishing food, and enjoy eating. To laugh and be hugged and to cry and be hugged! (And to not be touched if you don't want it!)
Meeting our needs allows us to function better in all of our relationships, our families and in community.

"Moral Education is the source of that spiritual equilibrium on which everything else depends and which may be compared to that physical equilibrium or sense of balance, without which it is impossible to stand upright or to move into any other position." ~ Maria Montessori

"The major work of the world is not done by geniuses. It is done by ordinary people, with balance in their lives, who have learned to work in an extraordinary manner." ~ Gordon B. Hinckley

"It's a helluva start, being able to recognize what makes you happy." ~ Lucille Ball
Have a wonderful week, Dear Reader. You are worthy of a balanced life. Sending virtual hugs.
~ Jacquie
