BIXBY BULLETIN NEWSLETTER

June 2024
Director's Dispatch
What a stellar community! A huge thank you to everyone who came together to make this year’s Celestial Soirée fundraiser a resounding success. I’m pleased to report that you helped us exceed our fundraising goal. Equally as important, the event exceeded our second goal of inspiring goodwill and community spirit among all who gave their time, talent, and treasures in support of the Bixby’s essential role in our five towns. Read all about it in the June 6th edition of the Addison Independent!

Special thanks to Co-Chairs Bethanie Brady Farrell (Panton, VT Giving Fridge), Julie and Bob Jones (Vergennes, Malabar), Laura Mack (Vergennes, lu.lu.), and Lisa Miller (Addison) who managed to carve out time in their busy lives to collaborate with all our wonderful sponsors, donors, volunteers, and staff team to make the evening a celestial success in support of the year ahead.

With Gratitude,
Library Director
What's New at the Library?
Welcome, Kelly Bartlett!
The Bixby Library is excited to welcome Kelly Bartlett to our team as the CVNHP Grant Summer Historical Collections Associate. Kelly is a graduate of the University at Albany’s English and Information Science Program with a concentration in archives and records. Her academic interests include community archives and the efforts of archivists to preserve the lives and minds of those forgotten or left from the record. This summer, she will work alongside the Bixby staff and history team to increase the accessibility of the library’s archives and to create a new exhibit celebrating the Champlain-Adirondack Biosphere. Kelly's work is made possible thanks to generous support from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership.
Welcome, Patty McNerney!
The Bixby Library is also delighted to welcome Patty McNerney as our Summer Intern. Patty is a rising sophomore at Hamilton College in New York and works at the college archives during the school year. She is interested in archaeology and ancient history, particularly the lives of under-represented groups throughout history. This summer, she will be working alongside the Bixby staff and the history team to make the library and archives run smoothly. The Summer Internship position is made possible by a grant from the United Way of Addison County.
Aubuchon Change Roundup Benefits Booked for Books
Calling all kiddos! The annual Booked for Bikes Summer Reading Challenge is back with gusto, generously sponsored by the Vergennes Rotary. From June 15th to August 15th, kids from grades Pre-K to 8th Grade can track their summer reading minutes. The more you read, the more chances you’ll get to win epic prizes!

This year, our prizes will be more epic than ever, thanks to Aubuchon Hardware's selection of Bixby's Booked for Bikes for their June Change Roundup Fundraiser. Every time you visit Aubuchon Hardware in Vergennes between June 1st and the 30th, you will be asked to round up your purchase to the next dollar to support Booked for Bikes. At the end of June, Aubuchon will match donations up to $2,500!

Thank you to Aubuchon Hardware, Scott Gaines, the Vergennes Rotary for supporting children’s literacy, healthy lifestyles, and summertime fun!
Read Around the World: Adult Summer Reading Challenge
Kids aren't the only ones who can read and win prizes this summer. We challenge adult patrons to expand the geography of your reading and see how many continents you can read a book from between June 1st and August 31st.

Once you read your first book, come to the Circulation Desk to get your own Summer Adventure Passport and a stamp for your first continent page. If you read a book from three different continents, you will receive a prize! For the most adventurous readers, read a book from all seven continents to win a BONUS prize.

Come into the library to see where the Bixby community reads on our interactive world reading map. Add a pin to the map to mark where your book takes place. Find inspiration for international novels and nonfiction and expand your reading horizons!

Good News For Library Lovers: Passage of Act S.220
The Bixby Library celebrates the passage of act S.220, which encourages free speech, inquiry, discovery, and public accommodation in public libraries. The act ensures compliance with First Amendment and anti-discrimination laws, provides stronger legal protections for libraries, and supports high standards of library services through the creation of model policies and ongoing professional development.

What good book suggestions we have had for book club! We have read such a variety:

  • Books that I absolutely adore (To Kill a Mockingbird)
  • Books that brought about good discussions (The Light Pirate)
  • Books that I always wanted to read but hadn't (Under the Whispering Door)
  • Books that I might not have found on my own (The Beekeeper's Apprentice)

That's one of the things that I love about book club, I end up reading so many books that I otherwise wouldn't have read. I'm looking forward to our next book, West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge, a book I have been wanting to read, but haven't yet.

Looking to read something outside your usual genre? Check out what book club is reading! Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk.

We Recommend
Circle of Sawdust by Rob Mermin
Step right up and into the clown shoes of Rob Mermin! Written by the founder of Circus Smirkus, Circle of Sawdust combines raucous tales with whimsical imagery to drop the reader right into the big top. The memoir is a joyful coming of age tale, complete with Russian bribes and miming dogs. Photos, illustrations, and colorful descriptions take you along for a ride of humorous hijinx and zesty characters. You will finish the book with a resounding appreciation for the blood, sweat, and tears, which form the unseen backdrop of the circus spectacle.

Meet Rob Mermin at the Bixby Library for an author talk on Saturday, June 15th from 1-2PM!

Funny Story by Emily Henry
The queen of contemporary romance is back with a new story about Daphne, a Children's Librarian who finds herself stranded in Waning Bay after her fiancé runs off with his best friend right before their wedding. Daphne unexpectedly ends up roommates with the aforementioned best friend's ex-boyfriend, Miles, who poses as her new beau. However, a friendship blossoms between the two as Daphne discovers how to find her way in a new place. Filled with Henry's characteristic wit and warmth, Funny Story is the perfect book to enjoy in a hammock by the lake.

Princess of Las Vegas by Chris Bohjalian
Whenever there's a new novel by local library lover Chris Bohjalian, I'm ready to put my name on the Bixby's wait list.

Bohjalian's newest release, The Princess of Las Vegas, is an enjoyable, character-driven book about Chrissy, a Princess Diana impersonator at a second-rate casino and her estranged sister, Betsy, who suddenly moves to the city. Chrissy's life is soon turned upside down by crime, family drama, murder, questionable characters, and shady cryptocurrency dealings.
