4th Annual Domestic Violence Toiletry Drive

This past October was Domestic Violence Awareness month. The East Bridgewater Police Department partnered up with the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office to host its 4th Annual Domestic Violence Toiletry Drive. Toiletries such as oral hygiene products, soaps, combs, socks, deodorant, feminine hygiene products and more were collected for survivors of domestic violence and their families. For the past month, a collection tote bin had been placed in the front lobby of the police station for anyone to drop off their donations. The East Bridgewater Jr/Sr High School Sophomore Class of 2026 came by the station and dropped off multiple boxes full of hygiene products, socks, and other items that they've collected for the toiletry drive. Thank you to everyone that donated and made another year of the toiletry drive in recognition of domestic violence available.

EB WWII Dim - Out

From May 16th, 1942 until October 1943 the Town of East Bridgewater participated in a "dimout" to keep us safe from potential WWII attacks.
During the "dimout," porch lights were not to exceed 15 watts and must be shaded if direct light shone out higher than 90 degrees, all windows must be shaded 3/4 of the way down or all the way down if light could be seen from the street, and streetlights were to remain unlit at night.

Longtime EB resident Betty (Belnap) Stirling adds: "I remember that very well. I was 5-6 at the time and I remember that the top half of car’s headlights had to be painted black!! Also, my grandfather was a warden at Bridgewater State Institution. He had to take his small “bat” and go around the neighborhood and tap on anyone’s door IF their lights were showing from the outside! Interesting times... Enjoy the rest of the week. "

Climate Can Do: Updating Massachusetts' Bottle Bill
for a Greener Future

In 1983, Massachusetts launched the Bottle Bill, encouraging recycling with a $0.05 deposit on soda and beer containers. It worked well, cutting litter and boosting aluminum, plastic, and glass recycling. But times have changed, and this old bottle bill needs a modern makeover.

Two new bills, H.3676 and H.3690/SB2104, now before the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy, aim to refresh the Massachusetts Bottle Bill, addressing the challenges posed by today's beverage consumption habits and recycling issues.

The Proposed Expansion
Bill H.3676: An Act to Update the Bottle Bill Presented by Representative Michelle L. Ciccolo of Lexington, this bill seeks to modernize the Bottle Bill to meet current needs.

Bill H.3690/SB2104: An Act to Expand the Bottle Bill Presented by Representative Marjorie C. Decker of Cambridge, this bill aims to broaden the Bottle Bill's coverage to include any drinkable liquid intended for human consumption.

Why the Expansion Matters
Expanding the Bottle Bill aligns with today's beverage choices. The original law covered soft drinks, mineral water, beer, and malt beverages. Today, our drinking options include bottled water, flavored waters, coffee-based drinks, juices, and sports drinks, which the outdated bill doesn't include. This gap has led to more litter and waste.

Updating the definition of "beverages" in the Bottle Bill will include water, flavored waters, iced teas, coffee-based drinks, and sports drinks. This expansion is expected to generate about $20 million in new revenue, with $5 million going to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA). EEA will use these funds initiatives, such as municipal recycling, recycling transfer stations, source reduction, and public education.

How To Support The Bottle Bill Expansion
To support the expansion of the Bottle Bill, contact your elected officials and let them know you want to see Massachusetts' Bottle Bill improved by House Bill 3676 and House Bill 3690/SB2104. The Conservation Law Foundation has made it easy to reach out with a prewritten letter available for the public’s use here. Your actions can help Massachusetts move towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
