Enroll for FREE Alerts to Protect Your Property from Fraud

While you do not often see it in the headlines, deed theft and other real property crimes happen in Fairfax County, often without the owners knowledge until it is too late. That is why I am thrilled to share that the Fairfax County Circuit Court, in partnership with Fairfax County Department of Tax Administration and Department of Information Technology, recently launched a free property alert notification system that will help protect residents from title fraud. When I served as Chairman of the Older Adults Committee, I frequently met with community members about the need for a system like this that could alert property owners when changes are recorded on their property. This safeguard helps property owners to monitor all changes to their official property record, prevent any fraudulent activity, ultimately avoiding the tragic outcomes of home title fraud.

How Title Fraud Works:

Scammers use personal information to impersonate a homeowner with forged or stolen documents, often targeting properties with mortgages that are paid off, rental and vacation properties, or properties that are owned by victims of identity theft. Scammers use that personal information to submit a quitclaim deed, which transfers a property’s ownership to themselves or a shell company. They can then fraudulently transfer, or borrow against a property, leaving the real owner to prove it’s rightfully theirs.

How to Enroll in Free Alerts:

In order to participate in the free alert notification system, property owners can enroll for FREE through the MyFairfax online portal. You can find a step-by-step on how to enroll here.

By enrolling, property owners will immediately receive an email notification when any documents are filed on their real estate record with the court. By providing a timely alert, the system provides early detection of potential fraud, including unauthorized deed filings, or other suspicious activity involving real property records.

Key features of the Fairfax Property Alert System include:

  • Email alert when a document is filed with Fairfax Circuit Court's Land Records office matching the property owner’s name
  • Monitoring for unauthorized transfers or potentially fraudulent activity
  • Online access and management through the MyFairfax portal.
  • Quick, easy, and no-cost enrollment

I strongly encourage all Fairfax County and Fairfax City property owners to enroll in this free notification service. If you have a friend or loved one who may need assistance monitoring the record of their property, I strongly encourage you to share this with them as well.

Reducing Home Day Care Costs (October 21)

The cost of quality childcare in Fairfax County has been increasing while the number of childcare businesses has been decreasing. At the request of several Board members, including me, county staff is developing a Zoning Ordinance amendment to look at decreasing regulatory barriers and streamline processes to help facilitate the creation and increase capacity of home day cares. Proposed options include increasing the number of children by right with an administrative permit, adding new use-specific standards, and modifying the submission requirements and approval process. I opposed the current requirements when they were originally adopted because I felt they would impact the number of home day care providers. The final community meeting will be held on October 21st at 7 pm. For more information see here.

Clifton Haunted Trail (October 24)

The Clifton Haunted Trail is next Saturday, October 24th, from 7 to 10 pm. Be sure to get your tickets online as this event typically sells out.
