Newark Kids Count 2019 Includes Special Section on City's Young Men of Color

On March 28, Advocates for Children of New Jersey (ACNJ) and My Brother's Keeper Newark released the Newark Kids Count 2019 data book, which features a special section on the city's young men of color — the first comprehensive report of its kind. In partnership with ACNJ, we held various listening session with young men to gather key insights about their experiences growing up in Newark in an effort to (1) provide fact-based data on how young men of color are fairing in the city and (2) make a call to action to policymakers, advocates, grant-makers, and the larger community. Data Sources on Systemic Disparities Faced by Boys & Young Men of Color

For this month's issue, we wanted to highlight data sources that speak to the opportunity gaps for boys and men of color. These tools offer insights on a range of issues — including education, employment, and health. Too often data paints a negative picture of young men of color that plays into negative stereotypes, rather than calling the broader community to take action to address systemic disparities.

The Campaign for Black Male Achievement Releases City Index The Black Male Achievement (BMA) City Index scores cities on a scale from 1 to 100 according to their visible level of engagement and committed action on behalf of Black men and boys. The BMA City Index scores 50 cities that are home to more than 5.5 million Black men and boys, representing more than 30% of all Black men and boys in the United States. The BMA City Index website offers an interactive national map, with detailed scoring data and downloadable scorecards. Learn more at blackmaleachievement.org A Life Course Framework for Improving the Lives of Boys and Men of Color Arnold Chandler, Principal of Forward Change Consulting, talks about his life course framework for systemic change and Improving the lives of disadvantaged populations, particularly boys and men of color.
