This month's book club selection is Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A “brilliant [and] entrancing” (The Guardian) journey into the hidden lives of fungi—the great connectors of the living world—and their astonishing and intimate roles in human life, with the power to heal our bodies, expand our minds, and help us address our most urgent environmental problems.

When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

In Entangled Life, the brilliant young biologist Merlin Sheldrake shows us the world from a fungal point of view, providing an exhilarating change of perspective. Sheldrake’s vivid exploration takes us from yeast to psychedelics, to the fungi that range for miles underground and are the largest organisms on the planet, to those that link plants together in complex networks known as the “Wood Wide Web,” to those that infiltrate and manipulate insect bodies with devastating precision.

Fungi throw our concepts of individuality and even intelligence into question. They are metabolic masters, earth makers, and key players in most of life’s processes. They can change our minds, heal our bodies, and even help us remediate environmental disaster. By examining fungi on their own terms, Sheldrake reveals how these extraordinary organisms—and our relationships with them—are changing our understanding of how life works.

Did you know that the Hood River Library is a Carnegie library? Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated money to build libraries all over the world, including 1,689 libraries that were built in the U.S. between 1883 and 1929. Our library was built in 1913, which makes it 109 years old!

But after 109 years of enduring every kind of Gorge weather, the masonry work in our doorway is crumbling. A prominent doorway accessed via stairs, meant to symbolize a person’s elevation by learning, is a common feature of Carnegie libraries. We need your help to maintain the safety and beauty of this historic building so we can welcome our patrons through this doorway to learning for years to come.

Ongoing pandemic concerns meant we were not able to plan an in-person Feast of Words again this year, but our fundraising focus would have been the masonry work. We appreciate your support and generosity and hope that you will consider making a donation so that we can continue our mission to ensure the vitality of this valuable community resource.

We hope we can count on you.
Consider supporting the Library District through the Library Foundation's Annual Giving Campaign.

If you are interested, please download our form, complete and share it with your broker, then contact us at foundation@hoodriverlibrary.org to let us know about the transfer. This will ensure we are able to acknowledge your gift and credit it to you.
Become a Library Foundation member, it's one of the best ways to help sustain vibrant libraries in Hood River County. From fostering literacy in preschool kids to funding innovative programs for adults, your gift makes great things happen in libraries.

The Foundation Board meets monthly (except July, August, December) to determine how best to financially support increased quality of service, materials, and technology of our community’s libraries, plan for future growth opportunities, and coordinate events such as the annual Feast of Words fundraiser. Email foundation@hoodriverlibrary.org. for more details.

You can support your library by becoming a Foundation member, donating stocks and securities, giving to the Library Foundation endowment fund, or by joining the Library Legacy Society.
