In Memoriam:

Professor Thierry de Baère (1962-2025)

The Society of Interventional Oncology (SIO) mourns the passing of Professor Thierry de Baère, MD, FCIRSE, one of the most influential figures in the history of interventional oncology. His passing marks the loss of a visionary physician, scientist, educator, and leader whose work transformed the care of patients with cancer around the world.

Professor de Baère served for more than three decades at Institut Gustave Roussy in Villejuif, France, where he was Head of the Department of Interventional Imaging and a Professor of Medicine. Under his leadership, Gustave Roussy became one of the world’s leading centers for interventional oncology, integrating image-guided therapies into multidisciplinary cancer care at the highest level. His clinical practice was defined by rigor, innovation, and a deep commitment to patient-centered care, always seeking minimally invasive solutions that could improve both survival and quality of life.

A pioneer in research, Professor de Baère played a foundational role in the development of modern interventional oncology. His scientific contributions spanned tumor ablation, transarterial chemoembolization, radioembolization, and image-guided therapies across liver, lung, bone, and other malignancies. He authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and helped establish the evidence base that made interventional oncology a recognized pillar of cancer treatment worldwide. His work not only advanced technology and technique, but also shaped how interventional oncologists collaborate with medical and surgical oncology to deliver comprehensive care.

Equally impactful was his dedication to education and mentorship. Professor de Baère trained generations of interventional radiologists and oncologists, many of whom now lead programs across Europe and beyond. He was instrumental in developing international curricula and standards, including major contributions to CIRSE educational initiatives and European interventional oncology training frameworks. A gifted teacher, he was known for his clarity, generosity, and enthusiasm for sharing knowledge, whether at the bedside, in the angiosuite, or on the global conference stage.

Professor de Baère’s leadership extended across the international scientific community. He served on numerous editorial boards, guideline committees, and scientific councils, and he played a key role in shaping the academic and clinical direction of interventional oncology worldwide. He chaired the Program Committee for WCIO from 2009-2011 and served on the WCIO Board of Directors from 2008-2011. In 2024, he delivered the fourth Dr. Sidney and Dr. Michael J. Wallace Honorary Lecture at the SIO Annual Scientific Meeting. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, he was awarded the CIRSE Gold Medal in 2019, one of the highest honors in interventional radiology.

Beyond his remarkable professional achievements, Thierry de Baère will be remembered for his humanity, integrity, and kindness. He was a mentor who invested deeply in others, a colleague whose counsel was widely sought, and a physician who never lost sight of the patient behind the disease.

SIO extends its deepest condolences to Professor de Baère’s family, friends, colleagues, and trainees. His legacy lives on in the countless patients he helped, the physicians he trained, and the field of interventional oncology that he helped define. His impact will continue to guide and inspire our community for generations to come.
