Dear Friend:

We look forward to welcoming you to Herman's Memorial Tree Walk this Saturday afternoon, Aug. 30.

A few final notes and updates

DRESS for an outdoor setting and for walking. If you are sensitive to sun, insects, and/or poison ivy, please take precautions. This is an informal event, so wear casual attire and comfortable walking shoes.

ARRIVAL and PARKING - Continue going east, past the lane going to the Brockman home (1554 County Road 400 North), and look for signs pointing you to the parking area. Click the button below for a map and other information (under "Gathering")

TIMING

  • Since it will take 10-15 minutes to park and make your way to the event site, please plan to arrive between 2:45 and 3.
  • You may walk to the site, or ride in one of the shuttle vehicles.

WALKING

  • The main part of the tree walk is on flat ground near the house. If you are unsure about the second (longer, steeper) part of the walk, feel free to relax and enjoy the food and drink near the house.
  • If you do go on the second part of the walk, please stay on the gravel lane since there is poison ivy in the grassy areas off the lane. Also note that the hill going down is a fall hazard (deep ruts, loose gravel), and that the hill going back up to the house is quite steep. We will provide vehicles and drivers to assist, if needed, but if you have any doubts about the second part of the walk, just wait near the old oak tree, which we will all gather around for the final reading from Herman's "Trees I Have Known."

Herman and his beloved Black Locust, both of which are no longer with us.

Herman Brockman Memorial Tree Walk

General Outline of the Day

2:45 to 3:30pm — Arrive, park, fill out your name tag, including relationship to Herman (e.g., student, colleague, friend, neighbor, family member), sign our guest book, meet and greet family and friends, indulge in some of Herman's favorite drinks and snacks

3:30 — Welcome from the Brockman Family

4:00 sharp — Tree Walk begins, with readings of excerpts from Trees I Have Known. If you have a copy of the book, bring it along! (You have the option of a shorter walk, just visiting trees near the house, or a longer walk down to the bottom-land and then up the steep hill to the house.)

5ish, or whenever the Tree Walk ends — Food and Drink. We will have a light meal of sandwiches, snacks, drinks, and dessert.

5:30, or whenever folks are settled in — Sharing Time. We are really looking forward to hearing your memories and stories as we relax near Herman's beloved trees and enjoy some of his favorite foods, including Black Cows (aka Rootbeer Floats).

If you have any questions about the event, please reply to this email.

Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you!
