Friends,

This weekend is one of my absolute favorite events in downtown Saint Paul: the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. Rain or shine, incredible music fills up Mears Park and all of downtown. I have to be out of town this weekend and I’m super bummed I’m going to miss it, so please attend so you can tell me all about it! You can find the full line up below. Also this weekend is the first of the very cool Ordway Inside Out series in Rice Park!

As you make your way downtown this weekend, be sure to check out the info below as well regarding road closures. Thanks to all this rain we've been getting, a stretch of Shepard along the river will be closed beginning Sunday, and we continue to have our regular construction season-related road closures happening downtown as well.

And finally, we have a few spots left for our free speaker series event next Wednesday! Be sure to register to save your spot at the link below.

Take care and enjoy the weekend,

Joe

The free Twin Cities Jazz Festival runs Friday and Saturday in and around Mears Park

Stefon Harris and Blackout and the Joe Lovano Quartet will headline the 26th annual Twin Cities Jazz Festival on Friday and Saturday in and around Mears Park in Lowertown Saint Paul.

The free festival was founded in 1999 as a nonprofit organization with “a mission to keep the art form of jazz alive and well in our community.” This will be the first year under new executive director Dayna Martinez, vice president of programming and education for the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts and director of the Flint Hills Family Festival.

Flood watch: Saint Paul closing roads, Stillwater holding emergency meeting as more rain forecast

Shepard/Warner Road will close this Sunday due to the expected flooding on the Mississippi River.

A 3.2-mile section of the road — on the north side of the Mississippi River along downtown Saint Paul — will be closed to vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic from Eagle Parkway to U.S. 61.

As part of the closure, Second Street from Kellogg Boulevard to Sibley Street will be closed and Sibley Street and Jackson Street between Kellogg Boulevard and Second Street will be closed to traffic. These one-way street sections that normally connect to Shepard/Warner will temporarily be converted to two-way traffic open only to access adjacent buildings.

History Theatre's murder musical 'Glensheen' keeps fans coming again and again

The show, which leans into the crime's "murder, millions and mansion," returns to Saint Paul for another summer. The superfans will be there.

"Glensheen" succeeds partly because it tells the story in a way that does not dishonor the dead, said retired Star Tribune reporter Joe Kimball, who had just started at the Minneapolis Tribune when he broke the story of what was initially thought to be a botched burglary.

"It was almost an Agatha Christie type of thing with murder, millions and mansion," said Kimball, author of "Secrets of the Congdon Mansion: The Unofficial Guide to Glensheen and the Congdon Murders." "From the beginning, the family members said, Marjorie did this. She was living in Colorado at the time and sent her husband to do it."

Saint Paul aims to expand safety program

The city of Saint Paul is hoping to expand a program to improve safety across the downtown. In 2021, the Saint Paul Downtown Improvement District was launched to keep the area safe and clean. Organization leaders have seen positive results. Now, they want to use the same methods in other parts of the city.

“Our ambassador teams are out there. They’re on safety patrol. They’re out on bikes,” said Joe Spencer with the Saint Paul Downtown Alliance.

You can’t miss them on the streets of Saint Paul: The downtown street ambassadors are an extra set of eyes and ears in the city.
