THE WIDE WIDE SEA
by Hampton Sides

Hampton Sides proves he is a master storyteller in this meticulously researched nonfiction account of Captain James Cook’s ill-fated journey seeking the elusive northwest passage. In his third and final voyage, Cook traverses the globe and stumbles upon Hawaii, in what historians believe to be the first human encounter. Relations begin friendly, but ultimately Cook’s exploitative treatment of the indigenous people leads to his murder. Hailed as one of the most prominent figures of the age of Enlightenment, "The Wide Wide Sea” explores how Cook sealed his own fate.

LONG ISLAND
by Colm Tóibín
Colm Tóibín has said he doesn't like writing sequels. And yet, with his new book "Long Island," he has done just that. 25 years have passed, and we return to Eilis, the protagonist, at a crossroads in her marriage and life. She returns to Ireland (where we were first introduced to her in the book "Brooklyn") to visit her mother and ruminate. I absolutely loved this novel, and Tóibín's writing is so splendid. You can read this without having read "Brooklyn," but then you would miss out on the magic of Colm Tóibín.

THE MINISTRY OF TIME
by Kaliane Bradley

Our near future narrator's love of history, especially the polar expeditions of the 1800’s, make her the perfect “bridge” worker. She is assigned to befriend Graham Gore, snatched from a doomed 1845 Arctic expedition. Gore does his best to adjust to the times, and she is right there to help. Maybe more than she should… History, mystery, time travel and romance come together in this story unlike anything you’ve read.

THE FIVE YEAR LIE

You’ll be on the edge of your seat from the very beginning of this thriller. Ariel’s family started Chime and Co, which makes doorbell surveillance systems. She falls in love with an employee who mysteriously disappears the day her father dies. Five years later a mysterious text sends Ariel and her son Buzz on a harrowing journey to see if the father of her son is actually alive and if he was involved in her father’s death.

LIES AND WEDDINGS
by Kevin Kwan

Another funny, snarky novel from Kwan about an obscenely wealthy (or so they think) titled family in London and our view of their lives unraveling as their oldest daughter marries and the uber-controlling matriarch schemes to get the other two siblings hooked up with other “appropriate” mates. Set in swanky, luxe locales all over the world- you will tear through this comedy of manners with a great plot twist at the end!

HOW TO READ A BOOK
By Monica Wood

Please welcome Violet, Harriet, Frank and Ollie into your hearts! Violet is a 22-year old young woman recently released from prison after serving her sentence for vehicular manslaughter. Harriet is the widow who volunteers to run the in-prison book club. Frank is the husband of the woman Violet killed and Ollie is an African grey parrot with a mind of his own. These characters infuse this novel of second chances with love and hope. Just what my psyche needed.

FUNNY STORY
By Emily Henry

I think this is my favorite Emily Henry romance yet! The plot seems far-fetched (Daphne’s fiancé leaves her for Miles’ girlfriend, and they end up brokenhearted roommates), but she pulls it off! Full of charming characters, set in her signature Lake Michigan beach town, and starring a children’s librarian mid identity crisis, this one is just pure fun.

THE GODDESS OF WARSAW
By Lisa Barr
(releases 5/28/2024)
Before Lena Browning was a Hollywood golden girl in her heyday, she was Bina Blonski, an Aryan-looking Polish Jew gasping to survive in the cramped Warsaw ghetto during WWII. Bina was tough as nails, whip smart and with a face that could pass in and out of the ghetto smuggling goods and secrets. Now in her aging years, when the chance comes to make a movie of her life, she agrees with one caveat: tell the whole story and tell the truth that she has kept hidden for so long. A fantastic read with a heroine that leaps off the page.

THE PARIS NOVEL
by Ruth Reichl
Reading this novel is an absolute delight. It is a love note to Paris - its food, fashion and the Shakespeare & Co. Book Store. It's the 1980's when 32 year old Stella's larger than life mother leaves her a ticket to Paris upon her death. Stella reluctantly makes the trip, tasting her way into a life she grows to love. No one writes more tantalizingly about food than former "Gourmet" editor Ruth Reichl. Read and enjoy with a wedge of brie and a glass of wine!

In this heartfelt novel two sparring neighbors resolve their differences and bring a shared neglected garden back to life. As their friendship grows and the garden plans develop, a sense of community is once again restored to this special neighborhood in London. Family, friends, forgiveness, and renewal abound in this quiet cozy novel.

I CHEERFULLY REFUSE
By Leif Enger
A thoughtful read that takes place mostly on Lake Superior in the near future, Enger has created a love story with a dystopian twist. Rainy and his bookseller/sailor wife, Lark, watch the moral decay in the world around them, causing Rainy to flee by setting sail. There is no escape, though, and the beauty of this book comes as we witness his humanity in the face of darkness and despair.

A GOOD LIFE
By Virginie Grimaldi
(releases 5/28/2024)
I know that I’m a sucker for any Europa title, this lovely novel keeps the streak in play! Two sisters that were best of friends as children are damaged by a tragedy that had long reaching effects on their adult relationship. Alas, they must come together to empty out the home of their beloved grandmother and in the process they share their hearts and try to reconcile. Told in alternate timelines, voiced by each sister, the language is perfection. This a French translation, written by one of France’s most-beloved authors who is publishing here for the first time. A perfect read for the summer!

By Christina Lauren
"The Paradise Problem," the latest from romance queens Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings (aka Christina Lauren), delivers! Anna and Liam find themselves having to fake their marriage of convenience at a family wedding, and of course tropical island chaos ensues.
