Shelf Life
"Make a stuffing of bread, herbs, salt, pepper, nutmeg, lemon-peel, a few oysters or an anchovy, a bit of butter, some suet, an egg..." Sounds delicious, right? That's the recommendation for your turkey this year from American Domestic Cookery, Formed on Principles of Economy, for the Use of Private Families.

Engraving No. 6, which shows plating for a hare, roast fowl, and "boil'd" fowl.
Our copy of Maria Eliza Rundell's cookbook, housed in the Maryland Room, was published in 1819 and features nine specialty engravings for the home cook and "experienced housekeeper," with recipes for everything from poultry and meat to salads and sweets.
Looking for some historical or Maryland-inspired recipes this holiday season? Look no further than TCFL's own Maryland Room and discover gems like this—and more. (We promise, we have cookbooks from this century too...)
To learn more about the Maryland Room Collection, click here. And if you're craving something a bit more contemporary, we've got you covered—find your next culinary discovery (or disaster) in our nonfiction section.
