Monthly News & Updates

September 1, 2025

Hello,

As summer winds down, things are picking up between license renewals and getting ready for our Annual Convention. A lot is going on, and I just want to share a few reminders with you.

License renewals with the Division of Consumer Affairs are underway. This year, it’s a brand-new portal, so be sure to follow the instructions in the renewal email you received from the DCA.

If you’re a member of the NJ Movers Tariff Bureau, I’m your Designated Agent, which means I already have access to your portal and can step in if you run into questions. Just send me your Business ID # (you’ll find it in your renewal email).

We also started offering a license renewal filing service in the beginning of the year. If you’d like me to take care of your renewal for you, just let me know. There’s a small fee, but it saves you the hassle.

And of course, our Annual Convention is right around the corner on September 24 & 25. This event is what keeps NJWMA strong, and your support makes all the difference. The convention is packed with valuable content, networking, and ideas you can bring back to your business. If you can’t make it, consider sending a team member instead.

It’s only $330 for both days, including meals, and hotel rooms are just $67 a night. The room block will be lifted soon, so don’t wait to reserve. You can find the hotel reservation link embedded in the registration form. HERE! Take a glance at our convention page to see all of our amazing sponsors and exhibitors.

Thanks for sticking with NJWMA and showing up for the industry. I can’t wait to see you in Atlantic City, it’s always time well spent.

All the best, Tracy Brito Denora, Executive Director

Make Time for Your Business Future:

Join Us in Atlantic City!

Our 56th Annual Convention is coming up September 24–25, 2025, at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City and this is the one event you won’t want to miss.

Here’s the best part: the first day doesn’t start until 7:00 pm. That means you’re really only out of the office for one full day — a small investment of time for the knowledge, connections, and opportunities you’ll gain.

This year’s theme, The Next Generation of Moving: AI, Tech & Beyond, is all about practical tools and fresh ideas that you can take home and use right away. Expect sessions on AI, automation, marketing, sales, and operations — all designed to help you grow and stay ahead.

We’ll kick things off with pride as the American Legion Post 186 Color Guard opens our first-night reception, then wrap the evening with live entertainment from the Jukebox Legends. And throughout the convention, you’ll have the chance to network with exhibitors, sponsors, and industry peers who share your challenges and goals.

Take the time — just one day — to invest in your business’s future. We’ll see you in Atlantic City!

Take a peek at what’s planned HERE, plus get to know the exhibitors and sponsors joining us this year!

FROM THE BOARD ROOM: Board’s Perspective

Reflections from an Associate Board Member

I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve as an associate member of the NJWMA Board. This opportunity has allowed me the chance to meet many great people who make up the association, its membership, and learn more about this industry.  As I move into another year as a board member, I can say that those who run the association cherish this business. They care about the greater good of the moving and storage industry, the standards that movers are held to, and the consumers who need moving services.

I would urge any mover who has an interest in becoming a member to simply come to a meeting, reach out to a board member, or attend our annual convention, Sept 24 – 25 at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City, NJ. The annual convention is a great place to see what the NJWMA is all about. Come out and network with industry peers, learn about advancements in technology for movers, legislation to help our industry and hear about options available that could help your business. I hope to see you there. Stop by my booth and say hello. Chris Agostisi, Associate Board Member

PCS Joint Task Force Hosts Industry Day

On August 12, 2025, the Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Joint Task Force convened an Industry Day near Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, bringing together movers, shippers, and logistics providers to help improve the Department of Defense’s Household Goods Relocation Program.

During the event, industry representatives had the opportunity to share their insights, challenges, and innovations directly with Defense Department leaders. The goal was to identify practical solutions to improve timeliness, trust, accountability, and modernization within the program. Continue reading.

Trucking Industry Request to EPA Regarding NOₓ Rule

A coalition of trucking associations—including the American Trucking Associations (ATA), the Truckload Carriers Association, the National Tank Truck Carriers, and 49 state trucking associations—sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency on August 13, 2025. They’re urging the EPA to delay the implementation of its heavy‑duty NOₓ rule, currently scheduled for the 2027 model year, and push it back to 2031 instead. They argue that the industry is already under significant economic strain from inflation and weakened freight demand, and the compliance costs and operational burdens of this rule would only intensify those pressures. The Cost of Standing Still in Business

In today’s marketplace, the biggest risk isn’t always making the wrong move—it’s making no move at all. Standing still in business might feel safe, but it can be costly in ways that aren’t always obvious.

When moving companies resist change, whether that’s adopting new technology, updating their marketing approach, or investing in their people, they quickly fall behind competitors who are moving forward. Customers notice when a business is out of touch, and so do employees. Missed opportunities compound, market share erodes, and eventually the cost of “playing it safe” becomes greater than the cost of adapting. Continue reading.

DOT Extends Public Comment Period for Next Highway Bill

The U.S. Department of Transportation has extended the deadline for public comments on the next surface transportation reauthorization, known as the highway bill. Originally set to close on August 20, the comment period now runs until September 8, 2025.

The extension gives stakeholders more time to weigh in on priorities for the new bill, which will replace the current law expiring September 30, 2026. More than 750 comments have already been submitted, addressing issues such as truck parking, roadway deficiencies, restroom access, and hours-of-service flexibility.

DOT hopes the added time will ensure a wide range of perspectives are included as lawmakers shape the next highway bill.

Let the Association Be Your Voice On Capitol Hill

The NJWMA, represented by Tony Russo, our Government Affairs Representative and President of the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey, will be attending the 2025 Moving and Storage Conference "Call on Washington", scheduled for September 9–11, 2025.

During this event, Tony will have the opportunity to meet with members of Congress and their staff to share the needs and concerns of New Jersey’s moving industry.

He is asking our members to contact him with their thoughts and questions. Tony looks forward to bringing your voices directly to our government leaders and highlighting what truly matters to the movers of New Jersey. Please contact Tony at: arusso@cianj.org. Let's take advantage of getting our voices heard!

DOJ Challenges California’s Truck Emissions Standards

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has sued the California Air Resources Board (CARB) over its aggressive truck emissions regulations. The DOJ claims the standards overstep federal authority and disrupt interstate commerce.

This legal clash adds to industry confusion, as manufacturers previously filed lawsuits challenging the standards themselves. The outcome could reshape how emissions regulation is handled state-by-state or federally.
