Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ pursuit of real-time secondary-market data to help investigators trace recovered crime guns.

In other data news, on Devember 10th, Federal News Network published an article entitled ‘Bedrock’ federal data sets are disappearing, as statistical agencies face upheaval. In this story, Jory Heckman describes how deep staffing cuts, budget pressures, and policy disruptions are causing federal statistical agencies to delay, suspend, or eliminate “bedrock” data sets that underpin economic analysis and public policy. He also warns that declining public trust and survey response rates are compounding the problem, threatening the reliability and future viability of core federal statistics.

  • 'These losses have affected agency work and undermined innovation, modernization, and communication with data users, leaving agencies struggling to meet expanding demands for data that are more granular, timely, and responsive to policymakers’ needs,' the report states.”
