Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

This Saturday, the new season of Colburn Chamber Music Concert Series begins. Young musicians from one of the finest conservatories in the country will fill our church with classical chamber music, performed with skill and a beauty that can leave us in awe.

Pope Leo XIV recently reflected on the place of music in the life of the Church. Speaking of sacred music at his August general audience, he reminded us that music "is not merely a decorative part of the celebration"; it expresses the affective dimension of prayer and draws us together in praising God.

While he was speaking of liturgical music, his words point to something we have all experienced: music can transform us. It can lift a heavy heart, quiet an anxious mind, and open us to a beauty larger than ourselves. In that sense, music is a kind of light — a light of faith that reveals, the glory of God shining in our world.

I hope you will come to the Colburn Concert at 8pm on Saturday, October 17th. Admission is free, and all are welcome. Please stay afterward for a reception, where you can meet these gifted young performers and thank them for sharing their light with us.

If the light of music expresses what cannot be easily put into words, the light of a candle offered in prayer also gives voice to our faith. Looking ahead to All Souls' Day we fill our church with prayer of light and music in remembrance of our beloved departed.

In Christ, their light is not extinguished.

I invite you to join the community for the All Souls' Day mass on November 2nd.

Our Schola Cantorum, under the direction of Dr. Joung-A Monica Yum, will offer Maurice Duruflé’s beautiful Requiem, Op. 9. With its gentle and hopeful music, this masterpiece gives voice to what words alone sometimes cannot.

You may Light a Candle in memory of someone you have lost. The name of your beloved will be inscribed on the candle and placed around the altar. All the names on the candles will be called out in prayer during the Requiem Mass. To dedicate a candle, use the QR code in the announcement below or by sending an email to the Parish Office.

So, as we gather this Saturday to be uplifted by music, the light of talent, beauty, and faith, we give thanks for those whose lives once brightened ours and whose love still shines, alive with God.

Peace and blessings,

Father Gil
