Silent Auction Success!
Thanks to the hard work and donations of so many of you we raised $6600 for the AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund via our recent online silent auction and direct buys at the Holiday lunch. Along with your personal donations the auction is a major fundraiser for the Scholarship Fund which supports local college scholarships and Tech Trek sponsorships. Considering the possible increased sponsorship cost for Tech Trek, every little bit helps.
Many thanks to all who donated to the auction - individual members, interest groups, and local merchants. We had over 100 items up for bid including member handmade items, beautiful jewelry, gift baskets, restaurant gift cards, wine, tickets, and experiences.
A particular hit this year was member Janet Quin-Harkin’s offer to make the winning bidder a character in one of her upcoming books. This item raised $500 when Janet, AKA Rhys Bowen, agreed to make two members characters in a book. Thank you, Janet!
A Special Note
We were also fortunate to receive 20 sets of tickets for the Marin Speaker Series. All the Monday seats sold but there are still three seats for the Thursday series available. We are selling them for $50 per seat. Quite a bargain for four excellent speakers and a nice way to benefit the Scholarship Fund. Even if you are reluctant to attend in person at the Civic Center, there is a livestream option for anyone with a ticket. Please contact Dottie Burk for more information about the speakers and dates or if you are interested in buying a seat.

FALL FUNDRAISING CONTINUES
|
|
Our branch fundraising for local scholarships and Tech Trek continues.
In November you received a direct appeal letter from Angela Nuckles asking your support for our Branch Scholarship Fund. The goal this year is $18,500. This money provides scholarships to our local colleges, supports a college scholarship endowment, sends eighth grade girls to a weeklong STEM camp and also sends a college student to the national conference for college women student leaders (NCCWSL).
If you still have your letter you can respond using the form at the bottom. If you have misplaced it in the overwhelming amount of unsolicited mail, never fear. Simply donate online at our AAUW Marin Website. You can click the donate button or print out the page and mail in your check.

Tech Trek Makes a Difference in a Girl's Life
The auction committee received this note from a Tech Trek parent when she made a donation to support girls going to the 2022 camp.
"My daughter, Amanda Sinrod, attended Tech Trek years ago. At the time she wanted to learn chemistry, but the closest subject available there was food science, so that was her focus. She went on to attend UCBerkeley College of Chemistry and decided to (surprise!) pursue food science instead. She recently completed a masters in food science at UCDavis and now works for Mattson foods, and loves it. Thank you AAUW and Tech-Trek!"
Your financial support of Tech Trek is always appreciated, especially as the cost of camp may be increasing. Your donation can make a lasting difference in a girl's career choice.

Save the date of Saturday, January 29 at 11:00 am for our next branch meeting. Avril Angevine, art lecturer and docent with the SF MOMA, will speak on multicultural artists and their work.
Many of you will remember Avril from her prior presentations to us on Frida Kahlo and on women artists in general. She is a fabulous presenter. Do plan to join us!
Watch for the invitation to this ZOOM program coming mid January.

Meet 50 year member Jean Marchant
|
|
Who has the distinction of being the longest member of AAUW Marin? Jean Marchant!
Jean was given a membership in AAUW when she graduated from UC Berkeley in 1945 and she has remained a member, and an active one, since then. Jean is a Marin native, born in San Rafael, raised in San Anselmo when Marin was still a rural county and took the train to attend Tamalpais High School.
After college graduation she worked as a Director of the Camp Fire girls. She stayed active with the Camp Fire Girls after having children, helping to run its summer camp.
As her husband’s real estate business grew, she went to work managing the Mill Valley real estate office. While she has had a real estate license for years and was even President of the Marin County Real Estate Board, she says she never sold a house!
Even with this busy career while raising four children, Jean still had time to stay involved in AAUW Marin, making life-long friends, working on community projects like helping to establish Pixie Park and serving as President of the branch.
Jean has been retired for several years and lives at Smith Ranch but stays active in this retirement community with play reading and book groups and chairing the Community Relations Committee. Like so many of our 50-year members, Jean remains an active and engaged member supporting equity for women and girls. Thanks Jean

Happy 2022. Here is hoping for a safe and healthy year to come. We will have more in person events when it is deemed to be safe. In the meantime there will be zoom meetings and perhaps some small outdoor gatherings as the weather warms.
Something that I will be looking at with the help of Sarah Pruden and Sue Torres is the possibility of participating the AAUW California's Speech Trek in 2023. This program is a speaking contest open to all California high school students. We will be meeting in mid January and if you are interested and would like to join us please contact me.
The Board will be meeting on January 10 at 7:00 pm. Board meetings are open to all interested members, so if you would like to join us let me know and I will send you the zoom link.
In the meantime, stay safe and warm, Dianne Sheridan

Interest Group Activities
|
|
There are twelve interest groups available through AAUW Zoom for the foreseeable future. The newly revised list of current offerings is available on our AAUW Marin web site. If you are not currently a member of any particular interest group and would like to join one or more, please email the leader and/or Board Member Vicki Samo.
All members are invited to try out any group for a session or two before joining as a regular member. This social opportunity seems to be appreciated by those of us confined to home during this ongoing pandemic. Visit us!
