A Tasty and Successful Night

On March 7th, they kicked off the 15th Annual Taste of Whitman & Hanson with wall to wall booths of tasty treats. 100% of the proceeds were collected in support of scholarships for local students through Dollars for Scholars. With over 21 local food vendors, nobody went away hungry. The event included a cash bar, raffles for gift baskets and gift cards, and food available to take home and have a treat or nice meal for later.
The Whitman Hanson Dollars for Scholars sends its thanks out to all the restaurants and vendors that participated, and to the people of Whitman and Hanson, and everyone who attended and donated for their support.

Historical Tidbit: Hobart Canal
In 1731, Isaac Hobart, a farmer, constructed a dam and saw/grist mill along Beech Hill Brook in partnership with Elisha Lincoln, Matthew Pratt, Ephraim Spooner, Joseph Gurney, Joshua Pratt, and Nathan Gurney. By 1745 all of the partners, except Lincoln who sold his shares to Hobart, created a mill privilege by constructing the Hobart Canal and Tunnel to connect the two streams (Beech Hill Brook and the Shumatuscacant River) where the mill was located. They constructed a quarter-mile-long canal and 150-foot-long tunnel. The tunnel was stone walled on the sides and covered with large flat stones and had deep cuts at the entrance and outlet, some portions being 20 feet deep. The canal was often referred to as “The Old Ditch".
The Town bought Hobart Pond in 1955. The canal still appears on Sanborn maps into the mid-20th century, however not in detail. It appears that by the mid- to late 20th century, the canal and tunnel were no longer used as industrial waterways, due to closure of the manufacturing facilities in the area.
Remnants of the canal and tunnel can be seen south of the downtown core, north of South Ave., extending from immediately east of Pleasant Street to approximately Colebrook Avenue.

Climate Can Do: Recycling Household Scraps Through Composting

Thinking about starting to create your own compost? Composting is simple, and can be done right in your own back yard in a designated space or box.

Composting is a controlled, aerobic (oxygen-required) process that converts organic materials into a nutrient-rich soil amendment or mulch through natural decomposition. Microorganisms feed on the materials added to the compost pile, breaking it down into core materials.

Materials you add are "greens" and "browns." Greens provide nitrogen, and can include fresh grass clippings, food scraps, and coffee grounds. Browns provide carbon and act as a food source. Typical browns you can add include dead leaves, branches, twigs, and paper.

Benefits to Composting

  • Improves the structure and health of your soil by adding organic matter.
  • Helps the soil retain moisture and nutrients.
  • Attracts beneficial organisms to the soil and reduces the need for pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Reduces the potential for soil erosion.
  • Sequesters carbon in the soil.
  • Builds resiliency to the impacts of climate change.

Aerating occasionally helps the process. Without oxygen a compost pile is ready in 6 months to a year. With oxygen added, in just a few months you can add compost to your flower and vegetable beds, window boxes, and container gardens; incorporate it into tree beds; mix it with potting soil for indoor plants for a nutrient rich soil.

Artillery Fungus and Goals

Dr. Chris Jones, in this episode of the SEEing to Lead podcast, discusses his recent run in with artillery fungus and how our goals and habits effect us.

In the video, he ties in bad habits to not clearing out mulch. When we keep piling new mulch on top of the old, it makes the issue worse, and causes more problems down the line.

Dr. Jones suggests that there is no magic pill or solution- creating new habits, or getting rid of old bad habits takes some work and time; it's not something we can bury or get rid of immediately. An easy way to do this is replacing one bad habit at a time with a new, good one, and slowly better ourselves over time. Be purposeful, and act with integrity!
