THE BANNER

Note from Ellen

Dear Friends,

We continue our time in conversation with MaryAnn McKibben’s book, Better Than Normal: Virtues for an Off-Script Life this Sunday, and our topic will explore her third chapter, “From Productivity to Presence,” and the command to observe the Sabbath. We’re in the thick of vacation season which for many means time at the beach or the pool or the lake or in the mountains. It also means scrambling to cram everything in before we head out and a nagging worry that we’re shirking our duties when we’re away. Or is that just me?

Our text for Sunday is Exodus 20: 8-11, the commandment that tells the people of God to rest. It’s not a suggestion. It’s a commandment. And it’s a doozy in the face of a culture that often defines us by what we do, what we earn, or how much we work.

I hope to see you on Sunday when we’ll wonder a bit more about Sabbath together.

Grace and peace,

Ellen

Curious Kids Sermon Series: As we continue to celebrate the role of curiosity in the life of faith, later this summer we will offer a sermon series based on children’s questions about God, Jesus, faith, and/or the church. What do our children wonder about? What questions do they have? Please email your children’s or grandchildren’s questions to Pastor Ellen by July 1. We’ll do our best to answer and explore as many as we can later this summer.

Summer Reading Program

We had fun reading The Story of And on Monday. This story reminded us that two different ideas can be true at the same time and together we can create new things.

We hope YOU will join us for our next session: Monday, June 29, 1:30 PM in the Children’s Library.

Stories and activities may be best suited for elementary age children and families, and ALL are welcome!

A parent or caregiver should plan to stay and engage in activities alongside their child(ren). There will be fun for all!

Other Summer Reading dates:

June 29, July 13, 20, & 27

If you attend 3 of the sessions, you’ll be eligible for an ice cream at 2 Scoops at the end of the summer!

If you are unable to join us in person, you can still participate! Check out this page on the PC(USA) website: Guides for Sharing Stories with Children | PC USA Store

Several of these books are in our church library and others may be borrowed from René. The free downloadable guides offer conversation prompts for all ages, as well as hands-on activities.

June Lunch Bunch

Here are more details for our visit to Davidson! We hope your calendar has already been marked for Tuesday, June 30th. As well as seeing the “With These Hands” sculpture, we will be visiting Oak Row, one of the original buildings on Davidson's campus, erected in 1837. It was built by enslaved labor “on loan” from nearby farms and now serves as an exhibition space dedicated to honoring those whose contributions have not been previously recognized by the college.

We will carpool from our church parking lot on Church St. at 10:00 AM. Please arrive by 9:45 AM for a prompt departure. Call the church office reservation line, 704-788-2100 #7 by 3:00 PM on Monday, June 29th, or contact Sonia Horack at soniahorack@icloud.com. If you need a ride or want to volunteer to drive, please let her know. If you plan to meet us there, arrive by 10:30 AM at the Katherine Belk Visual Arts Center, 315 North Main Street. Turn left on Griffith Street, then Jackson Street then into the parking lot behind the Arts Center. We will be greeted there by Reverend Daniel Heath and shown inside to the Lecture Hall. Rev. Heath will share his personal connection to the town of Davidson and Davidson College as a descendant. It will last for 20 minutes before we walk across the street to see the “With These Hands” sculpture and Oak Row.

When our tour has ended, we’ll take a short drive to Lake Norman’s North Harbor Club for lunch and then carpool back to the church. If you have questions, please contact Sonia Horack using the above email address.

VBS Community Outreach

A huge thank you to everyone who donated items from the VBS wish list. With your generous donations, we were able to make an impact in our community.

Our 5 Alive! group delivered the bingo prizes to St. Andrews Living Center during their visit to play bingo with residents. Our VBS participants packed up cat and dog food into 1-gallon bags and 5 Alive! delivered the pet food to Cabarrus Meals on Wheels as they picked up their delivery route. Your donations were taken to the Junior Charity League of Concord and our 5 Alive! participants helped to pack 75 toiletry kits for the upcoming school year. Our Mission rotation helped to pack almost 100 lunch sacks of food for the Blessing Box. There were so many bags that the last ones were placed in the Blessing Box this week. Thank you!

Below is what Cabarrus Meals on Wheels posted on their social media about the impact of your donations:

A huge THANK YOU to First Presbyterian Church, Concord NC for your generous pet food donation!

We are especially grateful to the kids in Vacation Bible School who helped bag all of the pet food, making it ready to go straight into the hands of our clients with furry companions. What a thoughtful way to serve the community!

This donation came at the perfect time — we had just depleted our cat food supply after distributing June’s monthly pet food last week. Your kindness ensures we can continue helping keep both our clients and their beloved pets cared for.

Thank you for thinking of us and for making a difference for our seniors and their four-legged family members!
