President's Letter

January is FINALLY over and February brings us into “Ski Week” ( Feb. 17-21), Art Show kick-off (stick around after the General Meeting, Feb. 11), Guest Artist visits and, OF COURSE, Valentine’s Day! This month, I’ve decided to show the ❤️ to some of our local art galleries/museums and highlight some incredible art exhibits you can catch this month. Maybe a Valentine's date? Here’s just a handful of the things to see around our area.

Michelle Kuntzmann - President

NUMU, New Museum of Los Gatos

Mitra Fabian, January 24-May 18, 2025

“In Seeping Through Domestic Dissonance, Mitra Fabian creates a surreal and somber mixed-media installation that intersects the natural world, built environments, climate change, and human interference. This project will include Fabian’s recognizable organic sculptural forms as well as the use of resistors, capacitors, and diodes.

Triton Museum

Laurus Myth, January 25-April 27, 2025

Portals and Passages is a reflection point, weaving together Laurus’ portfolio of work across disciplines. From vivid colors, patterns, and layered paintings evolving into sculptural forms, Myth leans into art to tell stories of connection and relationship. Myth’s visual language is influenced by nature, technology, and intuition as they use symbols to decode their experience.”

Guest Artists Visits start this Month!

Francisco Ramirez

Raymond J Fisher Middle School will host local artist Francisco Ramirez this year. Francisco is a practicing self-taught visual artist and muralist. His artistic practice focuses on the celebration of life and the importance of highlighting the history and people of the area, with the intention of showing gratitude and humility. As an experienced muralist, Francisco regularly paints with the muralist collective TWC (Together We Create) and works consistently with Local Color to produce culturally relevant murals.

Since 2017, Francisco has collaborated on and created numerous murals throughout Santa Clara County and has also produced murals for three pedestrian walkways in San José, including at Quetzal Gardens and across Alum Rock Avenue from the Mexican Heritage Plaza (La Plaza). He also is a part of Kaleid Gallery located in Downtown San Jose and has shown in multiple galleries and museums including Works San Jose, The New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU), and MACLA.

Rayo Magos

The elementary schools will host Rayo Magos. Rayos is a practicing mixed-media artist. He uses art to explore personal narratives and universal themes. Rayos’s body of work focuses on symbolism, healing, spirituality, psychology, and social justice. As an Latinx artist, Rayos is constantly inspired by culture, people, identity, and the roles we play in society. He makes work for the community with the intent to bring hope, joy, love, compassion, empathy, motivation, awareness, and community building through imagery.

Rayos was the 2022-2023 Artist in Residence at the Children’s Discovery Museum, 2022 King Artist Residency at the Palo Alto Public Art Program, and is currently the 2024 San Jose Creative Ambassador and is in the 2024 Climate Resiliency Cohort Program with the City of San Jose. Volunteer Highlight

sunshine_love.jpg

As part of the Sunshine Committee’s Mission In 2024-25 we are going to show recognition for the contribution by one or more docents each month with a write-up in the Palette Newsletter. The purpose is to share achievements, challenges and any tips for future participation by docents.

This month, the Art Docents would like to highlight Priya Vijaykumar and Sherry Cohen. Sherry and Priya are relatively new Art Docent members, both having completed their training in December 2023.

Priya

We are grateful to Priya for her ongoing consistency and reliability—and the smile she always has on her face. As we discovered, there is a reason behind Priya’s smile.

“It’s so heartening to be in the classroom with the kids because their energy is so contagious,” she said.  “I’m really glad that I chose to become an Art Docent, and I always feel so happy after teaching.”

For Priya, being an Art Docent is all about having fun.  With every lesson she picks up, Priya spends time doing additional background research, becoming a student herself.  She then decides on one or two items of interest that she can add to the lesson.  She likes to think of a “hook” that will pique her students’ interest and get them exited to share their newfound knowledge at home.

“I’m so happy to be a part of this community,” she said.  “It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Sherry

We also admire Sherry’s courage in overcoming her fear of teaching. She was initially reluctant to sign up for classes, but she made a conscientious decision to put her hesitance aside and dive right in with both feet.  Since then, she has been teaching every month.

“I made myself do it—I just jumped in,” she said.  “ I was modeling it for my son.”

As a first step, she began observing the lessons that she planned to teach, and she armed herself with a clipboard when going into the classroom.  These strategies helped bolster her confidence, and she was soon able to relax and have fun.

“We have a great opportunity to positively impact kids through art,” she said.  “My children were exposed to art while they were growing up, and this contributed to their love and passion for the arts.”

Thank you Priya and Sherry for being a part of our wonderful community!

Amy Sherald: American Sublime

November 16, 2024–March 9, 2025

Amy Sherald: American Sublime invites you to breathe. Come and be taken in by the colors, shapes, and forms painted by one of America’s defining contemporary portraitists.

This exhibition presents nearly 50 of Amy Sherald’s luminous paintings, including her iconic portraits of Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor, poetic early works, and new works on view for the first time.

Sherald’s artworks convey the quiet power in everyday people and invite viewers to participate in a more complex debate about accepted notions of American identity.
