Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz
Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. this week celebrated the first six months of operation and production of hot-briquetted iron at its $1 billion, state-of-the art Direct Reduction plant right here in Toledo, and I was thrilled to take part in a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The plant employs nearly 160 people and it reinvigorated a site that was vacant.

Additionally, another Toledo-made product -- made with an environmentally friendly process -- now joins the global marketplace, and makes our nation that much more competitive against others around the planet.

Cleveland-Cliffs recognized early on in its site selection process that Toledo is a great place to do business and we have a talented and dedicated workforce.

We had other great economic development and job-creation news this week: exercise equipment maker Peloton announced it will create more than 2,100 jobs as part of a $400 million investment in Wood County, near Toledo, and solar panel manufacturer First Solar Inc. announced it plans to invest $680 million to build a third factory in the Toledo area by 2023 and create 500 new jobs.

When you hear us talk about how Toledo is number one in the nation for new business development, these are just a few of the reasons why.

We haven't forgotten small businesses either. They are part of the backbone of Toledo and I encourage anyone operating a small business and needs assistance, or any Toledoan who is interested in starting a small business, to reach out to us.

Toledo Fire & Rescue
The 60th anniversary of The Anthony Wayne Trail Fire was this week. On Thursday, we honored and remembered the 63 Toledo Firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the residents of Toledo.
Dedicated June 10, 1962, the Toledo Firefighters Memorial was constructed in remembrance of one of the worst days in the history of the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department. It occurred when a gasoline tanker truck exploded on the Anthony Wayne Trail killing four firefighters and seriously injuring six additional firefighters, along with 81 civilians.

During the service, we took time to acknowledge and remember Toledo Fire retirees who died in 2020. We also recognized three Toledo Firefighters who were added to the memorial in 2020, but were not properly recognized due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused the cancellation of the in-person 2020 memorial service.

Captain Harry Huhrt died on April 22, 1950 after suffering a heart attack while working at station 21. Captain Huhrt was appointed to the department on September 1, 1920.

Lieutenant William J. Rooney died on Aug. 12, 1951 after suffering a heart attack while working at station 19. Lieutenant Rooney was appointed to the department on Feb. 3, 1920.

Lieutenant Peter McGrane died on Jan. 9, 1970 after suffering a heart attack while working at station 9. Lieutenant McGrane was appointed to the department on July 16, 1940.

The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department has lost a total of 63 firefighters in the line of duty since 1872.
