Make your summer history-spangled!

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

It’s a historic summer across our country, and a time to reflect on the many stories that have carried our country, region and state to today. While the histories we share at Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm (now in our 30th year!) do not date back to the American Revolutionary era, they—and this site on which they evolved—are, in their own ways, revolutionary.

This summer, step away from the hustle of crowded attractions to experience the “revolutionary” histories of the museum and farm. All while observing blue skies and billowy clouds over historic pastures, and noticing the intertwining of mountain breezes and the sounds of busy birds and pollinators as they create a summer song. It is the ultimate season to wander through our historic-era gardens, spot grazing cattle, and reconnect with the simple rhythms of rural living.

Summer is the perfect time to just “B.” At Remick, that means Bandages, Bottles, Bridles and Brushstrokes, and how they are linked to this site. Our three guided tours bring these varied histories alive. You can step inside a late-1800s medical office and apothecary to discover how a father-and-son duo served their community for a combined 99 years. Art lovers will be captivated by the early-1800s wall paintings attributed to the itinerant artist John Avery. Finally, animal enthusiasts can explore the unique connection between dairy production and historic harness racing.

Not to be outdone, the farmstead grounds offer a beautiful backdrop for independent exploration. Throughout July, we especially invite you to bring a picnic to enjoy during National Picnic Month. While here, walk through the Museum Center to take in four continuing exhibits, as well as “Picnic-scapes,” an exhibit that celebrates picnicking (July only), stretch your legs along the meandering Binsack Trail, or browse the museum store for local and curated goods and Remick-raised beef.

Whatever options you choose, this summer, let’s celebrate history together!

JULY’S FEATURE PHOTO

Pictured in the Apothecary, Remick program manager James Cruickshank shares details about this room that was an integral part of the medical practices of the Drs. Remick (1894–1993) and served an additional (and surprising) purpose too. Visit this important space during a guided Medical History Tour at the Captain Enoch Remick House, offered Tuesday–Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

NH Gives outcome!

During this year’s NH Gives’ fundraising event in early June, we sought contributions to our campaign: This Old House: Repairing & Repainting the Captain Enoch Remick House. The goal in participating was to offset the cost of the extensive project.

The work has now been completed, and we are thrilled to be bringing visitors to the house—ushering them past gleaming clapboards and welcoming them through a freshly painted door.

If you missed it...

If the preservation of “the crown jewel” of Remick—whether due to its importance in our site’s history or the integrity of the building itself (perhaps both!)—or historic New Hampshire structures and landscapes are important to you, we will gratefully add your donation to the ones already received, and thank you. Your support is integral to our site’s work and continuation.

A Remick return

Angelica “Angie” Ballard has returned for the summer, rounding out our Visitor Services team. Over the winter, Angie worked as a ski patroller at King Pine Ski Area. Welcome back, Angie!

Angie is also assisting Taylor Lovely, our gardener, at the Sandwich Farmers Market each Wednesday through August. Taylor snapped a picture of our market stall, which we are sharing below. If you find yourself at the Market, stop by to say hello. While chatting, snap a selfie with Angie and Taylor, then share it with us. We’d love to share images of Remick spotted in “the wild”!

Speaking of farmers markets, we are the music sponsor at the Tamworth Farmers’ Market on Saturday, August 1, when Sky Road Band will be entertaining shoppers. Stop by this busy market for fresh, healthy and local items and say hello to the band!

Etched in Granite

“Today I fulfilled an ‘I’ve been meaning to do
’. For years I’ve seen signs and read about the Remick Museum and would think ‘I should go there.’ You made those thoughts happen and it was even better than I imagined.

“The enthusiasm you have for the Museum and Tamworth was so evident. The stories about the Remick doctors were fascinating and provided a real picture of life and medicine in the country at a time that change was happening rapidly.

“I have the opportunity to talk with many visitors at the State House and the airport in Manchester. I am looking forward to recommending a stop in Tamworth and a visit to the museum. After this tour I’ll be able to give them ideas about what they might experience. The Enoch House with its original furnishings and equipment will intrigue everyone.”

— Pat Storm, Granite State Ambassador

This message was sent to us after a recent visit to the museum and farm by a group of New Hampshire Granite State Ambassadors, pictured here in the dining room at the Captain Enoch Remick House. A visit from the NHGSA is not an ordinary visit. The organization comprises a dedicated group of volunteers—currently 520 across the state—who serve hundreds of travel and tourism-related businesses. In part, they recommend sites to travelers, based on their direct experience of the location, which is the reason we invited them to tour our site in late June. They are busy, energetic cheerleaders for New Hampshire. The state benefits from their service and we certainly enjoyed and will benefit from from their visit. We thank Kelly Bryer, the group’s director (and recipient of the 2026 Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Manager of the Year Award), the 16 people who joined her for a visit to Remick, and the NHGSA overall, for supporting us and all NH tourism sites.

You can be a Remick cheerleader too. Your word-of-mouth recommendation to local family, friends, and summer visitors is golden. As always, we appreciate your enthusiasm for and support of this beloved site!

The New Hampshire Granite State Ambassadors visited Remick on June 30 to learn more about the site and to take a Medical History Tour. Pictured here are a representative delegation from the team, including the organization’s director, Kelly Bryer (fourth row from the front, far left), as well as their tour guide, James Cruickshank, Remick Program Manager (back row). We were especially pleased to be able to pose this photograph in front of our newly painted Captain Enoch Remick House!
