What to do with Your IMRF Contributions

While you were working for an IMRF employer, you made contributions toward your pension. These contributions are held with IMRF until you decide what you would like to do with them.

If you are likely to work for another IMRF employer or work for another public pension system in Illinois, it may make sense to keep your service credit and contributions with IMRF to build your future pension.

For example, if you worked at a library, park district, or other municipality and are likely to work for another library, park district, or municipality in Illinois, it may be to your benefit to leave your IMRF contributions on deposit.

However, if you do not anticipate working for another employer in Illinois that participates in a public pension system, the best option may be to request a refund of your contributions. Remember, there are slightly different guidelines for requesting a refund based on whether you are a Tier 1 or Tier 2 member.

For a more information about the benefits you earned while working for an IMRF employer watch "Your Benefits Roadmap" webinar.

If you have questions about what the best course of action will be for you, be sure to consult a financial advisor who can answer your specific questions.

IMRF Achieves 97.4% Actuarial Funded Status

Every year IMRF publishes its Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR), which provides a look at its financial health.

One of the key take aways is that IMRF is 97.4% funded. This means that IMRF has over 97 cents for every dollar it will pay to current and future retirees and members.

Most importantly, this means that IMRF members do not need to worry about whether their retirement contributions will be there in the future.

Some other highlights from the report include:

  • IMRF had a net return rate of 14.2%
  • Its portfolio grew by $6.4 billion to $61.7 billion.
