Lyman Museum Receives Highest
National Recognition:
Accreditation Reaffirmed by the American Alliance of Museums
|
The Lyman Museum’s accreditation has again been reaffirmed by the American Alliance of Museums, the highest national recognition afforded the nation’s museums. Accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, to governments, funders, outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. The Lyman Museum was initially accredited in 1976, and it is one of only 25 museums to be continuously accredited from that year. All museums must undergo an accreditation review at least every 10 years to maintain accredited status.
Alliance Accreditation brings national recognition to a museum for its commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards, and continued institutional improvement. Developed and sustained by museum professionals for 50 years, the Alliance’s museum accreditation program is the field’s primary vehicle for quality assurance, self-regulation, and public accountability. It strengthens the museum profession by promoting practices that enable leaders to make informed decisions, allocate resources wisely, and remain financially and ethically accountable in order to provide the best possible service to the public.
Accreditation is a very rigorous but highly rewarding process that examines all aspects of a museum’s operations. To earn accreditation a museum first must conduct a year of self-study, and then undergo a site visit by a team of peer reviewers. AAM’s Accreditation Commission, an independent and autonomous body of museum professionals, considers the self-study and visiting committee report to determine whether a museum should receive initial accreditation, or have its accreditation status reaffirmed or revoked.
Lyman Museum President and Executive Director Dr. Barbara Moir spoke with pride about the many months of hard work and dedication by Museum staff and Trustees that led to the Commission’s decision. “The fact that our lengthy and comprehensive self-study work was undertaken at the same time as we prepared to complete and open our new Island Heritage Gallery, under pandemic challenges and restrictions, makes the final outcome all the more remarkable an accomplishment. Being an accredited institution not only means you maintain the highest standards of your profession, it makes you eligible to apply for and receive federal grants to make improvements to your public services, facilities, and operations.”
Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, 1,093 are currently accredited. The Lyman Museum is one of only five Hawai‘i museums to have earned accreditation status.
“Accredited museums are a community of institutions that have chosen to hold themselves publicly accountable to excellence,” said Laura L. Lott, Alliance President and CEO. “Accreditation is clearly a significant achievement, of which both the institutions and the communities they serve can be extremely proud.”
The Lyman Museum’s new Island Heritage Gallery, Earth Heritage Gallery, and Mission House are open to the public Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to purchase timed admission tickets by advance reservation, either online through the Museum’s website (www.lymanmuseum.org) or by telephone (808-935-5021). Walk-in visitors are accommodated as space permits. Details of current admission schedules, procedures, and rates are available on the Museum’s website, social media outlets, and by phone.

E Komo Mai, Julie Kamiyama!
The Museum is excited to welcome Julie Kamiyama, our new Curator of Collections and Exhibits, who joined us on March 16. Julie holds two baccalaureate degrees (in Art History and Archaeology and in Classical Humanities), and a master’s degree in Museum Studies with an emphasis in Collections Management.
For the past year Julie has been Collections Manager at the Kona Historical Society. Prior to that she served as Associate Registrar at the Stanford University Museum, and in several successively responsible positions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum of California, the Phoebe Hearst Museum of Anthropology (CA), the Anderson Art Collection (CA), the World War II Home Front National Historic Park (CA), and the Art History and Archaeology Museum (MO). She possesses a range of experience and skills necessary to her new position, as well as the professional and personal qualities we look for in an employee of the Lyman Museum.
Julie’s family has their roots in the Hilo side of our fair island, and she and her husband are very happy to be relocating here. She has already settled in—both to her new home and to the Lyman Museum ‘ohana—and we are delighted to have her on board. E komo mai, Julie!

Annual Golf Tournament a Most Enjoyable Success!
In October 2021 the COVID pandemic had a firm grip on all activities and we wondered what we would do about our annual Golf Tournament. Could we meet in person? Did we need to postpone? Well, we couldn’t meet in person and we couldn’t postpone, so we did the only thing we could do … we went VIRTUAL!
The Fred Koehnen Memorial Golf Tournament of 2021 was held at the Waikoloa Beach Golf Course between October 16, 2021 and November 21, 2021. We had a total of 48 players who enjoyed playing the Beach Course while providing much-needed support to the Lyman Museum. We are grateful to those golfers who also love the Museum, raising $17,500 to help sustain our hard work! The awards ceremony (also virtual) was held December 1st at 4 p.m. via GoTo Meeting (a platform similar to Zoom).
Many players loved the freedom of choosing their own day to play, but we also heard that most really wanted to go back to an in-person format next time around. Our next tournament is scheduled for October 22, 2022 at the Waikoloa Beach Golf Course. It is currently an in-person event, and if all goes as planned we won’t have to go virtual this year. If you’ve played with us in the past, you’re already on the list to receive an official golf invitation/flyer! If not, or if you know someone who would like an invitation, please send an email to Liz Ambrose at: membership@lymanmuseum.org

Lyman Museum Participates in Blue Star Museums 2022
This summer, the Lyman Museum will once again be participating in the Blue Star Museums program. As a Blue Star Museum, we will be offering free admission to active duty military personnel and their families from May 21, 2022 (Armed Forces Day) through September 5, 2022 (Labor Day). More than 2,000 museums throughout the U.S. are participating in 2022! You can learn more about the Blue Star Museums program by visiting https://www.arts.gov/initiatives/blue-star-museums.

The Lyman Museum has been called “the gem of Hilo,” and has been repeatedly voted Best Museum in East Hawai‘i by the community—most recently, this past year! We want to continue to represent our town and island in such glowing terms, but also to be considered a primary, “go-to” resource for Island folks as well as a destination of choice for visitors from local and global communities alike. Please JOIN US in this effort … during the COVID-19 pandemic and the forced shutdowns, we lost a lot of members and now need your help more than ever. Please encourage your family members, friends, and colleagues to support us by becoming members and helping to “to tell the story of Hawai‘i, its islands and its people.” Here are some comments from members and visitors who appreciate what the Museum brings to our community:
“First rate! Have seen bigger museums, but never better. Contains materials professionally identified yet understandable and accessible.”
“My students were in awe of the gemstones and minerals … your exhibits are ideal for our curriculum!”
“I really liked coming to the Museum and seeing all the cool things there. Thank you for showing and teaching me how Hawaiians lived before. Also, I liked seeing the many things other cultures brought to Hawai‘i.” (from a 4th grader)
“Your public programs are some of the best things about living here … we wouldn’t miss them!”
Join our ‘ohana today; come in person to visit us or join via our website! View the benefits of membership here: https://lymanmuseum.org/support/membership/ then fill out our membership form here: https://lymanmuseum.org/support/membership-application-form/.
