MAYOR'S UPDATE
From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin
I started my Saturday with the Ossining Village Fair. As always, this event brings excellent fun, great food, and entertainment for all to enjoy. Ossining is filled with fun family activities that highlight so much of what our Village offers. The final event attendance has yet to come in, but we may have had the largest attendance at the Village Fair in years between the beautiful weather and the plethora of activities and vendors. Shout out to the Chamber of Commerce, all the organizations that put this event together, and the Village Staff, Public Works, Park Department, and first responders for their hard work. I'd also like to thank all the folks from near and far who stopped by to chat with me and other elected officials. A bigger thank you to the businesses on Main Street for their patience and generosity of spirit when their businesses temporarily suffer from street closings.
Later in the day, I made my way to Fable Farm for the Ossining Children Center's annual Spring Benefit Dinner. This organization has done so much for families in Ossining and continues to grow. To say it was a Farm-to-Table Experience is an understatement. I toured the farm (and saw their many chickens) and had the pleasure of joining over 160 people in honoring three community leaders, including Irwin Kavy (pictured here), for their many contributions to our community.
Juneteenth is an American national holiday, with many wonderful celebrations throughout Ossining and the surrounding areas. Many businesses, banks, and all government enterprises are closed Monday, June 19th. We are grateful to the Ossining Juneteenth Council for coordinating so many Juneteenth events throughout the month. If you are interested in the mosaic of our history, you might be interested in putting the following events on your calendar.
Congratulations to Trustee Dana White, who graduated from the Pattern for Progress Fellows Program Yesterday. Dana and her group presented their final project, Elder Care in the Hudson Valley: Facing the Shortage of Home Health Workers. Join us in congratulating Dana on this accomplishment and her commitment to improving our community.
For those interested in learning more about your property assessment, please note that the Town of Ossining’s Board of Assessment Review meets annually on the third Tuesday of June to hear complaints regarding assessments. The Board of Assessment Review will meet this year on June 20, 2023, from 4:30pm – 8:30 pm to hear any complaints regarding assessments. The Town does all the assessments for both Town and Village properties.

Several community members have complained about the challenges regarding mobility conditions of State Route 9A. We have heard complaints about how it is maintained and have offered some proposals to the DOT (Department of Transportation) for increased safety measures. More recently, the DOT has become active in developing a plan of action and is requesting public engagement from folks in Briarcliff, Town, and Village of Ossining for the part of Route 9A that affects mobility in our communities. Below is the call for engagement on June 21.
This week’s Work Session will occur on Wednesday, June 14th, 2023, at 16 Croton at 7:30PM.

Some items of note:
  • The Village Board will discuss the bus tour we took of the Village on May 24th. Our discussion will include Havell Street and Yale Avenue traffic flow issues, overnight/hardship parking, and Croton Avenue property’s violation status.
  • This March, the Westchester County Board of Legislators voted unanimously to approve the ‘Truthful Disclosure for Candidates' bill in an effort to promote transparency and accountability among County elected officials. This act requires candidates for County Legislator and County Executive positions to complete a Candidate Disclosure Form that provides biographical information, education, military, and employment history. The disclosure form requires the candidate to certify that the information contained in the form is true and correct. Based on interest from the Village of Ossining Board of Trustees, Corporation Counsel Kahan will discuss the addition of Candidate Disclosure requirements for Village elected officials.
  • There will also be a discussion on two proposed local laws: Revision to chapter 57 (Videoconferencing of Public Bodies) and revision to chapter 250 (Vehicles and Traffic).
Sunday, June 18th, is Father's Day. We wish a Happy Father’s Day to all those who celebrate this special day. It's a nice time to acknowledge the contribution of fathers to individual families and societies.
