Halifax's Farmers Market

The Halifax Farmers Market is bustling with energy and community spirit each Saturday, 10a-2p, 503 Plymouth St (Halifax Congregational Church). Residents and visitors come together to support local farmers, artisans, and small businesses. From fresh produce and homemade goods to crafts and sweet treats, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Good local food, hand-made one-of-a-kind treasures, and sunshine, the market fosters a strong community connection. Neighbors caught up with neighbors, children laughed and played, and conversations flowed as people shared in the simple joy of gathering together in support of local talent.

The Halifax Farmers Market continues to strengthen the town’s spirit, reminding everyone of the value of coming together to celebrate and support one another.

Historical Tidbit:

Washing Machine

Recently, I was reading a journal that my great-grandfather had written in 1905. Among the pages, I came across a short note entitled, Washing Machines:

"A home without a washing machine today is as rare as one without a telephone or radio, but then it was a great exception.  I bought a 1900 washer in 1904, and it was my job to get up early and operate it. The motive, (its) power, was a couple of strong springs that had to be kept in motion."

The earliest manual washing machines imitated the motion of the human hand on the washboard by using a lever to move one curved surface over another and rubbing clothes between two ribbed surfaces. This type of washer was first patented in the United States in 1846 and survived as late as 1927 in the Montgomery Ward catalog. The first electric clothes washers, in which a motor rotated the tub, were introduced into America about 1900. The motor was not protected beneath the machine, and water often dripped into it, causing short-circuits and jolting shocks. By 1911, it was possible to buy oscillating, cylinder, domestic washing machines with sheet metal tubs mounted on angle-iron frames with perforated metal or wooden slat cylinders inside.

Climate Can-Do:

Farm Fresh Eggs

The eggs that you buy may have an impact on your overall health.

Knowing where your eggs come from is important to understanding the nutritional

values that you are getting from your eggs and the quality of the eggs you buy.

Overall, eggs that come from free-range chickens are preferable.

Free-range: chickens have access to the outdoors and can

participate in natural behaviors such as nesting and laying eggs. This is the

style most commonly used by smaller local farms.

Cage-free: chickens are not kept in cages, but have little to no

access to the outdoors.

Studies have shown the following benefits of free-range eggs over cage-free eggs:

⅓ less cholesterol

¼ less saturated fat

⅔ more Vitamin A

3X more Vitamin E

7X more beta-carotene

2X Omega-3 fatty acids

In addition, free-range eggs are 6X higher in Vitamin D, have

significantly more B Vitamins, and contain more antioxidants.

Make sure to shop locally for high-quality, nutritional eggs!

Generations' 2025 Fur Festival Fundraiser!

On Saturday, June 21st, furry friends and friendly faces gathered at Halifax Town Green for the 2025 Fur Festival! All leashed dogs were welcome to enjoy the festivities.

The Generations members, Sarah Littlejohn, Louise Carbone, and Carol Keegan, were in charge of greeting and selling raffle tickets. Deemed "The Grill Team", Sarah Sloat, Louise Carbone, Judy Rakutis, and Carol Gough cooked up a storm, filling the stomachs of anyone who came with an appetite.

There were K9 demonstrations, multiple contests, and a vendor market. The Plymouth Comfort Dogs and the 4H Dog & Sheep Program were also in attendance to show their support and join in on the fun. To bless the dogs, Reverend Wildman of Halifax Congregational Church came by on this sunny day.

In its entirety, the Fur Festival was quite the success in bringing funds to the Halifax Council on Aging and the community of dog lovers together!

 Enthusiasm for Life

Today, I shall be, in Shakespearean terms, a dankish pottle-deep giglet. Or a bootless folly-fallen dewberry.

“I'm sick of following my dreams, man. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with ’em later." ~ Mitch Hedberg

"Make sure your life is a rare entertainment! It doesn't take anything drastic. You needn't be gorgeous or wealthy or smart, just very

enthusiastic!" ~ Bette Midler

“Before you marry a person, you should first make them use a computer with slow Internet to see who they really are.” ~ Will Ferrell

“I can’t end my messages with Love, Shaq because the B-52s ruined that for me.”

~ Meme attributed to Shaquille O’Neal

“You can’t be that kid standing at the top of the waterslide, overthinking it. You have to go down the chute.” ~ Tina Fey, Bossypants
